Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

The Disciplines "SMOKiNG KiLLS" CD $15.00 (WME-Norway)
With his new band The Disciplines Posies co-founder, Bacharach collaborator, REM and Big Star sideman and esteemed solo artist Ken Stringfellow gets his garage on. Gritting, spitting and windmilling, welding his silvery pop chops to Norwegian, Euro-trash-pop chart-climbers Briskeby’s full-throttle, guitar-driven glam-bombast (with the occasional ballad, sure). The results are spectacular. Stadium-sized songs with a big, fierce, grungy vibe; like Frosting On the Beater-big! On sale for just one week! Sound samples on the front page.

Roy's Vinyl Pick of the Week

Vivian Girls "Tell The World" 45 $5.25 (Woodsist)
Irresistible mix of shoegaze, punk, and '60s girl-group sounds with beautiful reverb-drenched vocals. Features three self-recorded tracks of lo-fi goodness. PITCHFORK: "Brooklyn noise-pop band Vivian Girls drop sweet girl-group melodies into proto-shoegaze squalls the way the Jesus & Mary Chain used to and the way groups like the Aislers Set, C86s-ers the Shop Assistants, and the Manhattan Love Suicides have done with female vocalists. Vivian Girls keep the Shangri-Las' melodrama, too. "Tell the World" is rebellion in the form of romance, kids casting off their chains for a kiss like the protagonists in "I Think We're Alone Now". It's more harmony-oriented than are some of the groups' peers, and the tunes can take a more speech-like, punk-edged turn via groups like the Wipers, whom Vivian Girls have covered."

Thrillsville: Parasol staff's weekly picks

5th Dimension
The Magic Garden
PS, UK Wow! Here at Rev-Ola we're proud to present this true undisputed classic of orchestrated, psych-tinged soft pop. The 5th Dimension are one of the most successful American bands of the late '60s. Hey, everybody knows their hit versions of 'Up, Up And Away' and 'Aquarius'! However, in 1968 they were teamed up with producer Bones Howe and wunderkind composer/arranger/all-round bona fide musical genius beyond redoubt, Jimmy Webb, who presented them with a complex song cycle based on his own tumultuous relationship with his partner. Nestling between such dyed-in-the-wool classics as 'Carpet Man', 'The Girls' Song', 'The Worst That Could Happen' (which all became hit singles for other artists) and the life-affirming title track (as covered by Dusty Springfield no less) are such lesser-spotted Webb gems as 'Summer's Daughter' and 'Paper Cup'. The whole cycle is linked with beautifully ornate pieces of orchestration, sitar flourishes and ethereal vocals. The contractual obligation inclusion of an earlier recording of The Beatles' 'Ticket To Ride' was originally shoehorned into the middle of the running order but we've taken the liberty of shuffling it to the end so it no longer interrupts the flow of the cycle.

Acid Mothers Temple & THe Cosmic Inferno
Journey Into The Cosmic Inferno

Black To Comm
Fractal Hair Geometry
PS, GERMANY Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label, a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works "Fractal Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating & sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50 recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy 4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery, one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live) band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock, Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music, seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered neon-coloured collage artwork that is printed on special ultra-heavy cardboard stock.

Bongripper
Hate Ashbury
PS, US You'll be leveled, you'll be razed, your body will begin to break down at a molecular level... The latest release from Chicago's Bongripper finds these hippy-hostile gents conjuring epic, instrumental, proto-stoner manifestos that span riff-laden doom, spacey postrock jams, inebriating psych weirdness, sublime ambient gravitas and outright noise/drone freefall. Playing from their grinding guts they have created an album of nameless songs that drives like a ginormous tank-treaded weaponized concept car in Hades. I don't doubt that Pelican is scared of Bongripper's musical molten lava, they are a twee-pop band in comparison. Electric Wizard isn't scared exactly, but then again they don't have to share a fucking city with Bongripper now do they?

Bongripper
Heroin
US, PS Beware. Seasoned proto-metal doommeisters get their drone on; tinkering with the void, incontinent within the continuum and messing with the matrices. No voice, just monstrous riffs and glassy-eyed psychedelic noise-ambient minimalism. Not the Heroin Kit, just the tunes and artwork in a glassine sleeve, originally released in 2007, CDR repress, limited to 100.

Hello? 10 tracks released in 2007, a massiveness that encompasses 79 minutes, more than enough time to alter your state and wallow in its weird. Chicago doom/sludge mob Bongripper's proto-metal-postrock, sub-sub-Sabbath subterraneanisms, rapturous ambient blissing and hellacious heaviosity will show your speakers who's boss. Your subwoofer will thank you later.

Brother JT
Purgatory Sweet Purgatory (8")
PS, US Since the late 80's, Eastern Pennsylvania's John Terlesky (a.k.a. JT) has cut a unique path from his garage stomping path of self destruction with his band The ORIGINAL SINS to his more lo-fi & psychedelic impulses released under the Brother JT monkier. An amazing EP of ALL EXCLUSIVE tracks from Ol' JT. 4 song EP features an introspective Velvets infused vibe that's very reminiscent of his 2005 full length effort, Off Blue on Birdman Records. 3 new songs and lusher revision of the song "Throwaway" from his 1999 effort "Way to Go" released on DRAG CITY. Very limited edition, so don't miss out on your chance let Brother JT take you on a trip to Purgatory, despite whatever the Pope has to say. RECOMMENDED

Bubblegum Lemonade
Susan's in the Sky EP
PS, US Scottish wonderkids Bubblegum Lemonade debuted early this year with an outstanding single 'Ten Years Younger' that earned song of the day honors on influential radio station KEXP and amassed countless positive reviews in the music press including favorable comparisons to influential 60's popstars (The Velvet Underground, The Monkees, The Byrds) and 80's indie legends (Jesus and Mary Chain, Razorcuts, Biff Bang Pow!). Before delivering the all important debut album, the band pause for a moment to release a spectacular second EP! Title track 'Susan's In The Sky' is an everyday tale of an airhostess and her slacker boyfriend caught up in a Romeo and Juliet type scenario. It's another sunshine wall of pop with Rickenbacker guitars, tambourines and nice organ bits. A short dose of California sunshine perfect for all seasons. Among the EP's exclusive extra tracks, the cleverly titled 'Surfin' USB' is a proper jangle with fuzzy guitars and a nice Beach Boys coda, while 'Just Like You' continues the California theme in a 150 bpm mini classic drenched in Mary Chain feedback with a mix of fuzz and surf guitars. Closing track 'Holocaust' is a superb cover of the legendary Big Star classic featuring a mix of Rickenbacker and acoustic guitars. Once described as "the perfect C86 pop band that just happened to turn up 22 years behind schedule," Bubblegum Lemonade deliver instantly memorable songs with brilliant pop melodies. 'Susan's In The Sky' is another remarkable success for Matinée and a vibrant reminder of the essential new pop coming out of Scotland. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

Carter, Tom
Shots At Infinity
PS, US Comprised of recordings from various basements in the northeastern US from late 2007. Steering away from the more delicate string environments & modal folk improvisations of previous CDs, the disc features maximum loop delay drone overload stretched over long, densely harmonic tracks, retaining the melodic content & flow of earlier releases. His solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, w/heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise & drone bands.

Carter, Tom
Shots At Infinity 2
PS, US This is the companion release to the Tom Carter CD titled Shots At Infinity 1 being release on Important simultaneously. Shots at Infinity 2 is two long live tracks in the same mode as Shots At Infinity 1, but more cut loose and blown out, recorded in Nemo Bidstrup's record store and Burnt Hills' basement jam zone. Tom Carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides. Since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. He has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Jandek, Tetuzi Akiyama, Matt Valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like Badgerlore (with Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance), Friday Group, Mudsuckers (with Robert Horton and the Yellow Swans), and Zaika (with Marcia Bassett of the Double Leopards and Hototogisu). Carter's solo work covers a lot of territory, but latter-day sightings show him to be concentrating on looped guitar drones of immensely stacked beauty, with heaps of psychedelic melodic content missing from the repertoires of many noise and drone bands. His influences include everyone from LaMonte Young to David Crosby.

Cold Sun
Dark Shadows
PS, US "First time available on CD, Cold Sun from Austin, Texas was recorded in 1970 in the legendary Sonobeat studios, where the Mariani and Johnny Winter first LPs were produced. The Cold Sun band are considered contemporaries of Velvet Underground and The Fugs, often listed as being in a similar vein but inspirations for this unique piece actually go back to the desperate, haunted Joe Meek. All songs lyrically express dark, mystic poetry with the true '60s psychedelic floating/distorted fuzz spirit presented in short compact mini-epics along with several mind blowing long tunes, such as 'Ra-Ma' (11 min.), 'Here In The Year' (9 min.) and 'Fall' (7 min.). Discovered by Rockadelic Records of Dallas, Texas in 1991, the Dark Shadows album saw the light of day the next year as a limited LP version, to become today one of the most important and revered US psychedelic underground albums from the early '70s. Rockadelic heard it in the form of an old scratchy acetate that one of the Cold Sun band members had made in order to be able to play the recording at friends` parties on their turntables. The acetate only contained 2/3 of the songs but so greatly impressed them that Rockadelic managed together with bandleader Bill Miller to release the complete sessions from master tapes. Autoharp wizard Miller eventually spearheaded Roky Erickson's international debut as the Cold Sun band joined forces with Roky in 1974 and became BliebAlien, later evolved into The Aliens and backed Roky on his famous albums and historical concerts. Carefully remastered from the master tapes, this album will bring new rewarding listening experiences in expanded fidelity, plus 2 unreleased non-album songs, authentic Live/Concert recordings of 'Live Again' (10 min.) and 'Mind Aura' (7 min.). The fidelity of these reel to reel live recordings is also remarkable. The CD and Vinyl issues will both have an extended booklet/insert with liner notes by Jello Biafra plus rare photos and other surprises. According to Patrick (Lama) Lundborg from Lysergia.com: 'Best Rockadelic LP ever, and in my opinion the best Texas LP of the time.' Enjoy this ONE-HOUR psychedelic Happening, a 'must-have' '60s/'70s heavy uber-psych masterpiece!"

Golden Animals
Free Your Mind And Win A Pony
PS, US Golden Animals have delivered their debut album, " Free Your Mind And Win A Pony." The album is 11 tracks deep, entrenched with pre-war blues influenced, classic rock and roll. Fans of their sold out E.P. will dig the sonic transition of this mystical, desert dwelling, rock and roll duo. Produced by Chris Coady. (Yeah Yeah Yeah's, T.V On The Radio, Entrance) mixed by Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) The music press have been quite impressed- "Make no mistake: this is psychedelic pop-rock for the flower generation, still going strong in 2008. It is pure old style California: all guitar driven attitude, and bluesy stomp. " Bearded. Press Coverage includes Blender, NME, Mojo, Anthem, Dazed and Confused, and Drowned in Sound. Pitchfork called Golden Animals a "dusty California guitar nugget." Available in CD wallet or 180 Gram LP. (limited 500 press). Produced by Chris Coady (TV on The Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Mixed By Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devendra Banhart). Press Quotes: "When they rock out in the faux-blues readymade "The Steady Roller," you can practically inhale the pungent aroma of their pirate shirts. They're a marriage made in psychedelic desert-blues heaven." Blender "unpolished sound from ghostly echoes of 60's West Coast Psychedelia 50's rock and roll and swampy old blues. They have a nice, semi-chaotic way about them" Mojo "Their ragged eclecticism is a winning one, taking detours into slide country, beat up folk and starry desert ballads" Uncut "Make no mistake: this is psychedelic pop-rock for the flower generation, still going strong in 2008. It is pure old style California: all guitar driven attitude and bluesy stomp. Free Your Mind and Win a Pony has got all the hip-slung fun and holler of alt scene favourites, The White Stripes, but presents itself without dark edges." Bearded "Psychedelic blues-rock, long on reverb and chugga-lugga drum/guitar rhythms okayed by the light of a baritone moon" Independent on Sunday "Delicately crafted songs such as such as Follow Me Down are interspersed with chugging psychedelic blues and infectious, mescalin-aroundthe- campfire feel." The Guardian "Transcends the limitations of their rudimentary set up. Album highlight "Queen Mary (The Flop) features multiple tempo changes and builds to an electrifying frenzy which must go down a storm in a live setting. "Ride Easy" begins as a tender country plodder, but undertakes several detours with satisfying results" DrownedInSound.com "An intense blend of scratchy blues riffs, woozy psych, and walloped drums" NME "They know how to riff with atomic force" Dazed and Confused

Greater Than One
All The Masters Licked Me
PS, US This was Greater Than One's first "proper" LP, issued originally in 1987 by Graeme Revell (SPK) and Brian (Lustmord) Williams on their Side Effects Records label. Here it is paired with Trust, their first attempt at the album's recording but released in 1990 on We Never Sleep (LP) and in 1991 by ROIR (CS). While the popular world knows more about Lee Newman and Michael Wells as Technohead, GTO, or Tricky Disco, All The Masters Licked Me is their first fully realized concept of weaving samples into a vivid aural tapestry. From the original press release: "The music is devised from sampling sounds which are programmed via a computer system to form strong and powerful pieces of aural art: mixing noises from the underground system with ethnic chanting, heavy metal & hip hop beats with military drumming and classical orchestration. The album contains 9 tracks on each side, with pieces referring to rioting 'The Sweet Smell of a Supermarket On Fire' to ' The Rape of Sam the Fox,' a track that evokes gallery slaves, masturbation and physical brutality. Each track is carefully constructed to convey the intentions and meaning contained within the titles." The album was recorded and digitally mastered by Greater Than One. To make the CD the original betamax studio master tape was baked for 72 hours at a special audio house in the UK. The DAT for Trust was generously donated by Lucas Cooper of ROIR. Enhanced CD content includes MP3s of the entire album, unbroken, photos, cover images, an art book, and an extensive book with articles and press clippings and words from Michael Wells and others.

PS, US London was the introduction of Greater Than One to the blossoming post-industrial culture as spearheaded by Chicago-based WaxTrax! Records. It was released in July of 1989 as a double LP/single CD collection of music recorded from 1987-1988 on Greater Than One's London-based label, K=K Recordings, and includes the entire LP of Dance of the Cowards. Makoto, Kawabata & Michishita Shinsuke
Basement Echo
PS, US Basement Echo is the historical meeting point of two generations of the Japanese underground. Kawabata Makoto, leader of The Acid Mothers Temple, and Michishita Shinsuke, leader of LSD March, are together here for the first time in a guitar duo. Though Kawabata and Michishita are from the same scene the fact that they are from different generation means that they bring different energy to the collaborations. This fact is extremely exciting for Kawabata who refers to Michishita as "one of the most promising musicians in the Japanese Underground." Both artists agree that Basement Echo was a step into the unknown with neither really knowing what the resulting sounds would be. For Michishita the collaborations have been a dream come true. He describes Kawabata as having a "soul of rock that never burns out." After the recordings were complete the two friends sat down and raised a triumphant toast. Recorded at Snowflake Sound in Sapporo in October of 2007. Totally improvised with no editing/overdubbing. Designed by Darryl Norsen.

Northern Portrait
Napoleon Sweetheart EP
PS, US Stunning second single from new Matinée favorites Northern Portrait! Upon release of their debut 'The Fallen Aristocracy' EP earlier this year, the accolades started pouring in for this new Danish band: "as perfect as jangling guitar pop can get"... "an instant classic"... "the bar has been set very high indeed"..."these songs are second to none"... "outstanding is an understatement"..."a modern pop classic"..."single of the year!" The EP has topped the Matinée best sellers chart every month since its release with good reason. On the highly anticipated 'Napoleon Sweetheart' EP, the band worked to expand its sound slightly while retaining the classic appeal of its debut. The brilliant lead track 'I Give You Two Seconds To Entertain Me' was the second song ever recorded by the band but has been completely remixed and remastered for this EP. Featuring jangling guitars, keyboards, superb vocals and bright melodies, the song is a three-minute classic inspired by the feeling of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. 'Sporting A Scar' is the first of three additional tracks on the EP-thematically close but more self-reflective than the lead track, with especially superb lyrics and more breezy keyboards. It's another gem! 'In An Empty Hotel' is a short and catchy tune about the clash between hopeful dreams and the practical problems that can occur, while the nearly epic 'Our Lambrusco Days' is a slightly sentimental and warm ballad with relatively simple instrumentation and open guitar tuning giving the song a special sound. Reviewers of the first EP rightly questioned how Northern Portrait could possibly follow such a strong debut single. The band has responded in brilliant fashion, as 'Napoleon Sweetheart' is another solid contender for single of the year. The bar has been set very high indeed. Limited to 1000 copies in custom minijacket sleeve.

Owl Service, The And Alison O'Donnell
The Fabric of Folk
PS, UK If you thought social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook were just devices which sucked you into an unstoppable vortex of wasted time, then think again. A chance discussion between Steven Collins and Alison O'Donnell, formerly of legendary Irish prog-folk troupe Mellow Candle, took place on such a website and out of that conversation came the first fruits of this collaboration. The Fabric of Folk is a 5-track EP featuring Collins' in his guise as main man of the Owl Service, one generation of folk-rock crashing head-long into an earlier, glorious era represented here by the considerable vocal talents of Alison O'Donnell. Capturing the many different faces of folk-rock, the five songs here - two are original compositions by the pair, one of which was written with the Straw Bear Band's Dominic Cooper - are perfectly formed, heartfelt and touching but with more than a hint of darkness. This follows on from the Owl Service's previous release for Static Caravan, the Cine 3" CD (VAN 140), and arrives alongside their debut album A Garland of Song, which is being released on Southern Records. Meanwhile, Alison's former band Mellow Candle have returned to prominence on the back of the newly repackaged Swaddling Songs - their solitary album release - which has been remastered and reissued by Esoteric/Cherry Red. Inspired by a mutual recognition and respect, the pairing of Collins' band with O'Donnell is a dreamy combination. Imbued with a sense of revivalism, The Fabric of Folk is far from backward-looking and instead concocts something incredibly new which, while referencing the production techniques and masterful storytelling of Brit-folk's heyday, is bubbling with new ideas and an inherent knack for crafting sublime arrangements.

Plastic Crimewave Sound
Plastic Crimewave Sound
PS, US At last, a new LP from Chicago's spacepunk purveyors! Following '06s sprawling double concept LP, No Wonderland, this is perhaps their most consistent and paint-peeling statement yet. These tracks were captured with little studio trickery, in a live-type fashion, a set of bellowing free-fest scuzzrock, biker boogie, Kraut-style dirges, cosmic communal jams, and fist-pumping no-anthems. This is easily the most seriously rocking Plastic Crimewave Sound line-up yet, with hot new leads courtesy of Nick D'vyne, and the solid backbone of PCW (guitarscrawl, yelps) Mark Lux (bass rumblage, electronix) and Lawrence (Skog Device) Peters (drum). Snakegrinder
Snakegrinder & The Shredded Fieldmice
PS, US "Every burg in the '70s that had a steady supply of weed and electricity undoubtedly provided a birthing ground for the formation of bands influenced by the likes of Jerry Garcia and Lowell George, and the Delaware area was no different. What was different was that our subjects-at-hand got it together and in 1977 released an unassuming document for posterity, containing nothing but original, winding (dare we say 'snake-like?') compositions and good vibes throughout. Since then, the album has garnered accolades from the Acid Archives crowd and so we felt the time was right to give the group's efforts a proper (and properly licensed from the band) presentation, with an 'old-style' heavy mini-LP sleeve and thick booklet containing pics, gig posters, song lyrics and liner notes by producer and long-time fan, Gregor Alligator. Sweet, Matthew
Sunshine Lies (ON SALE)
PS, US SPECIAL PRE-ORDER PRICE, GOOD UNTIL 9/2! New album from Matthew Sweet joined by Susanna Hoffs, Ric Menck and Richard Lloyd. Pretty Parasolly, dontcha think? Without warning, this consummate artist just may have made the album of his life, not by consciously trying to recapture the brilliance of his three milestones, Girlfriend, Altered Beast and 100% Fun, but simply by following his big heart, while hot-wiring the process between inspiration and execution so that there's no longer any distance between them. With tongue only partly in cheek, Matthew describes the new record's sound as "power-pop-folk-rock-psychedelic-melodic-singer-songwriter-type stuff." That turns out to be an accurate general description, but the real intrigue is in the details. By turns achingly melodic and drivingly visceral, Sunshine Lies swirls with relatable emotion and bad-ass attitude, seamlessly incorporating the artist's expansive aesthetic from one end (poetry) to the other (noise). On Sunshine Lies, Sweet intermixes his distinctive brand of shimmering folk rock ("Byrdgirl," "Daisychain," "Around You Now") and signature goosebump ballads ("Feel Fear," "Pleasure Is Mine," "Back of My Mind"), with the album's primary impulse, what he refers to as "the crazy songs." These are heady, arrangement-based pieces where anything goes in terms of tone, texture and performance-the mindblowing "Time Machine," the balls-to-the-wall "Room to Rock," the brawny "Flying" and the Who-like "Let's Love."

Trad Gras och Stenar
Gardet 12.6.1970
PS, US 1996 reissue. The first in our new series called Swedish Underground Archives. The series will focus on classic yet mostly unreleased recordings by known and unknown to mythical Swedish progressive/psychedelic groups from the 1960s/70s. First out is the best ever recording from the legendary Trad Gras & Stenar (Trees Grass & Stones) recorded at the first ever Swedish outdoors summer hippie festival in 1970. The sound is just amazing: a stoned lysergic wall of acid guitars jamming away and never letting up, pounding bass, furious drums and mystical howling vocals. A true landmark in psychedelic/progressive history.

Trad Gras och Stenar

PS, SWEDEN 1995 reissue of the first Träd Gräs och Stenar album, originally issued on the Decibel label in Sweden in 1970. Their name translates to "trees, grass & stones." A rock group led by Bo Anders Persson (after his works with Pärson Sound, Harvester, International Harvester), this was their first of three albums, a definitely more "rockist" continuation of the post-minimalist experiments of the earlier groups, but still with that undefinable Swedish underground feeling. Similar in vibe to the live document on Subliminal Sounds, Gardet 12.6.1970. This will be the only record in your collection to start off with covers of "All Along The Watchtower" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" that you won't want to kill somebody with. Thom Monahan's (Vetiver, Joanna Newsom, Silver Jews, Devendra Banhart) unconventional production techniques & talent for capturing intimate performances integrate with Tussle's krauty exploration of rhythm leading to the bands most epic, experimental yet holistic release to date. Unthank, Rachel & The Winterset
Bairns
PS, US US pressing of their album originally released in the UK in 2007. This is the sophomore release from the Folk/Rock outfit. It follows the incredible success of The Cruel Sister, which was Mojo Magazine's "Folk Album of the Year" in 2005 and announced the arrival of a major new force in the Folk scene. Like so many other Folk artists, the group have moved way beyond the traditional boundaries of the Folk circuit, drawing their audiences from across the spectrum of music lovers. Like Seth Lakeman, they tour constantly and create traditional (and traditionally inspired) music that appeals to both the died-in-the-wool (arran, of course!) Folk fans and to a much younger fanbase. In this light, their covers of songs by Bonnie Prince Billy and Robert Wyatt don't seem out of place in the least. Rachel and her band play Folk that is both traditional and traditionally-inspired, appealing to Folk and singer/songwriter fans across the board. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "It's rare to hear a folk group where piano stands as the central instrument (the fiddle often feels like it's there in a supporting role), but they make it work, and when the sisters harmonize in their singing, it can be quite sublime. Time will shake off the hype that's attended them over the last couple of years, but this is a band with real spark and invention."

Trip In Time Vol. 3: Psychedelic Adventures On Planet Earth
PS, GERMANY "This is the third chapter of the 'Trip In Time' psychedelic series, and it's at least as interesting as the previous ones, with only unreleased material! It presents 18 of the recent top Hard-Psych-Garage-Kraut-Underground bands (several from Scandinavia and Germany, but also bands from Spain, France, US, and Peru). Listening to this compilation you will not believe that all these songs are contemporary recordings (most are very well produced but reflect a very intense retro spirit -- nearly unbelievable). The music itself ranges from a hard and heavy Doors sound, Pink Floyd style, blues hard rock a la Mountain, true '60s garage beat but also early Amon Duul 2 of Brainticket flashes. A running time of 78+ minutes and a 12-page booklet will guide the way to the music of tomorrow." Artists include: Electric Mystical Soul Vibration, The People, Ginger, Jenda Wight, Jarvis Jay, Fuzz Mantra, Mother and Sun, Psychoine, The Magnificent Brotherhood, Crystal Caravan, Living Room, The Flying Eyes, Black Box Massacre, Serpentina Satelite, Aqua Nebula Oscillator, Space Debris, Fantasyy Factoryy, Zaphire Oktaloque.

Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike Part 2 1965-68
PS, UK Part two of the first time thematic overview of West Coast independent label Challenge Records. The label hit paydirt in early 1966 when it scored a coast-to-coast hit with The Knickerbockers outstandingly energetic rave up 'Lies.' This riff on The Beatles sound could actually have been The Beatles. Its inclusion on Lenny Kaye's Nuggets set 'Lies' in stone as a all-time classic. Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike celebrates this and the other nuggets that Challenge issued from 1965 to 1968. There's The Brogues paint-peeling punk rocker 'Don t Shoot Me Down' -- the band featured future members of San Francisco legends Quicksilver Messenger Service. Also heard are more irresistible, rockin' and melodic high-energy gems by The Knickerbockers, the absolutely incredible psychedelic punk of Florida band We The People, the tough-as-nails Lindy Blaskey and the Lavells and the superb psychedelic harmonies of Fenwyck's 'Mindrocker.' And then there's the folk rocking and punkish sides recorded by Gene Vincent with Glenn Campbell, as well as The Jefferson Handkerchief's hippy novelty 'I'm Allergic To Flowers.' Allergic To Flowers: Garage Beat & Popsike never lets up. Every cut is a top-drawer winner."

A Visit To The Spaceship Factory 20 Gems From The Early Years Of Prog
PS, UK A Visit to the Spaceship Factory presents 20 ear-watering morsels that will thrill and entertain in equal measure. Wander the dimly lit corners of the Spaceship Factory, an establishment designed to produce vehicles that could take you from the geometric wallpaper of your room to the far side of your electric dreams. It wasn't in production for very long, but while it was operating, not only did it manufacture million-selling models such as Yes, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, but it brought you the brash rock of Treetops, the polished guitar wizardry of Israeli progsters Jericho, the fuzzed-up dirt of Jesse Hector's proto-punk outfit Helter Skelter, and countless other designs now being re-appraised or still waiting to be recognized. The conveyor belts may be still, the furnaces may be cold, but the ships still fly to the stars. Psychic Circle's intrepid vinyl hound, Jamie Romer, has scoured the land in his quest to excavate more undiscovered psycho-prog stunners. This new selection bears testament to his endeavors. Other artists include: Mousetrap, Deadwood, Fuzzyduck, Incredible Hog, Mouse, Beggars Opera, Kingdom Come, Little Bighorn, Strange Fox, Onyx, Spontaneous Combustion, UFO, Sheephouse, Pussy, Axe, Sunchariot and Kansashook.

Vivian Girls
Tell The World
PS, US Irresistible mix of shoegaze, punk, and '60s girl-group sounds with beautiful reverb-drenched vocals. Features three self-recorded tracks of lo-fi goodness. PICTHFORK: "Brooklyn noise-pop band Vivian Girls drop sweet girl-group melodies into proto-shoegaze squalls the way the Jesus & Mary Chain used to and the way groups like the Aislers Set, C86s-ers the Shop Assistants, and the Manhattan Love Suicides have done with female vocalists.

Webb, TK & The Visions
Ancestors
PS, US TK Webb & The Visions Ancestor Following the release of TK Webb's second solo LP, Phantom Parade (Social Registry, 2006), dubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine as a four-star, oddly gripping effort, it was evident that Webb's songwriting was beginning to outgrow the sound that had peppered his solo efforts. The new songs that would go on to comprise the Ancestor record referenced the rock music that Webb had grown up on. This sparked his decision to form The Visions in the summer of 2007. Joining Webb in the new band on second guitar is Brian Hale (ex-Love As Laughter), who had previously been accompanying Webb on bass following the release of Phantom Parade, Nic Gonzales (The Comas, Love As Laughter, Blood on the Wall) on drums, and Jordan Gable rounding out the line up on bass. This new cast helps take TK's acoustic visions and plugs them in through the Marshall, making for a heavier, more cohesive listen than Webb's previous work. Produced by Matt Boynton at his Vacation Islands Studios in Brooklyn, Ancestor speaks of modern day paranoia, love, and a host of other human emotions many of us face in our day-to-day, making for not only an amazingly heavy, but also a sincerely beautiful recording. TIME OUT NY: "As good as TK Webb is as a whiskey-stained country-blues troubadour, we're glad he's got a rhythm section behind him now. Together, the outfit is one of NYC's hottest rock bands, a ragged but staggeringly powerful outfit that triangulates Zeppelin, David Allan Coe & Spacemen 3."

Alvarez, Lesser, Gonzalez
Why Is Bear Billowing (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US A couple years ago, Baltimore's Alvarez was playing stripped down electro-pop (60s French chanteuse style) in the band Cache Cache. Other projects include playing guitar in the drone-tinged country-folk group The Tall Grass, as well as an electronic side project called The Ruby Stallion Ensemble. On this release, Lesser and his acoustic guitar craft some of the prettiest folk tunes you'll hear this year. He delivers his songs with a sense of whimsical earnestness, and has garnered comparisons to Nick Drake, John Fahey, and Donovan.

Current Sunlight (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, AUSTRALIA Beautiful 2005 album from now defunct British troubadours. Mike now plays in LTI band Co-pilgrim. At just under 5 years since the inception of the band, Black Nielson has established an impressive reputation, both on record and as a live act. The modest level of success achieved by the band can be traced in a steady trajectory from noble beginnings on the south coast of England, formed by principle songwriter Michael Gale... And that trajectory shows no sign of abating.

Bound Stems
Family Afloat (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE SEPTEMBER 9TH)
PS, US This expresses a crucial personal transition & a collective one. While BOUND STEMS quit their day-jobs to tour relentlessly throughout 2006 in support of their previous album (one that garnered praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Alternative Press, URB & Chicago Tribune), the band returned home ready for new challenges, & made the communal decision to return to the more stable life of work weeks & strong roots. It was a choice that also ultimately made the concept of home central to this 2008 album. The songs sound like preparation: the family has grown now, to include new ones being formed in Chicago. But there's no settling down in these songs: family life is raw & confusing, as uncomfortable & unexpected & rewarding as crucial.

California Oranges
Imperial Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE OCTOBER 7TH)
PS, US Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a gem of a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars and a super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely sounded as
