Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Crystal Stilts "Self-Titled" CD $10.25 (Woodsist)
Recent singles collection from awesome NYC lofi garage-pop freaks that sunk its hook and won't let go, plus it's on the weird and wooly Woodsist label, so it's automatic. Yes, there's a C86/Subway/K Records/Flying Nun battle of naive/gothic/weird wills going on here; all in the very best ways. Echoing and gothy, like Joy Division with a twist of Pin Group fuzz-fusion, naïve and sweet like Beat Happening shaded with The Razorcuts. Garage odes! Moody dirges! Woozy ballads!

13th Floor Elevators
Going Up: The Very Best Of The 13th Floor Elevators
PS, UK 2004 release, single CD best-of collection. "The 20 greatest mind-blowing highlights recorded for the International Artists label between 1966 and 1969 by the pioneering psychedelic rock group. Featuring the groundbreaking single, 'You're Gonna Miss Me,' other classics such as 'Fire Engine,' 'Slip Inside This House' and 'May The Circle Remain Unbroken,' plus the recently discovered nugget 'I Don't Ever Want To Come Down' and a manic version of Van Morrison's garage classic, 'Gloria.' Fronted by the truly eccentric and iconic Roky Erickson, The 13th Floor Elevators produced some of the most inventive and memorable music of the era. Their often-menacing drug-fuelled songs with a potent combination of R&B, folk-rock and Kinks/Stones punk and stoned lyrics based on a nihilistic hippy philosophy have brought them cult status ever since."

All That The Name Implies
S-T
PS, US This mellow collection of communal U.S. hippie folk was recorded in 1968 and went undiscovered for decades. Featuring male and female vocals, strummed 6 and 12-string acoustic guitars, congas, flute and tambourine, it's a lost gem that's bound to appeal to fans of stoned rural psychedelia. The songs range from touching ballads to whimsical ditties and a highly unusual medley in tribute to folk giant Fred Neil. It makes its CD debut here, and comes complete with all four sides of their equally-rare and obscure 45s.

Ambarchi, Oren
A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks
PS, US There is a vivid breadth to the guitar deconstructions of Australian OREN AMBARCHI. Sometimes his work takes a delicate lilt; it can also dive into dark and deep pools of sound when he joins cowl-core ensembles Sunn O))) (with Stephen O'Malley) and Burial Chamber Trio (with Greg Anderson). Whether with those bands, solo, or in collaboration with luminaries ranging from Mike Patton and John Zorn to Christian Fennesz, he consistently reroutes his instrument into zones of arch, alien abstraction. "A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks" offers a dizzying gaze straight into a chasm of extreme frequencies - paint-peelingly high and bowel-churningly low - all set atop a sub-strata of menace, angst, and contemplative beauty.

Ant Trip Ceremony, The
24 Hours [re-issue]
PS, US In 1968, a group of talented college students at Oberlin College formed a band and recorded their only album, 24 Hours. Pressed in scant quantity, this album would become a collector's item, selling for hundreds of dollars. Cicadelic Records is excited to release the complete album on CD with detailed liner notes and photos on the history of the band. The psychedelic sounds that emanate from this album will have listeners 'turn on, tune in, and drop out.' Originally Issued In 1968. 40th year anniversary release!

Arms
Kids Aflame (CD/DVD)
PS, US Inspired by a love of "sad/weird/insular genius types" like Neil Young, Stephin Merritt, & David Byrne, the music cloaks catchy tunes in fuzzy, echo-laden production & TODD GOLDSTEIN's melodramatic, crooned vocals. A true one-man band, he recorded this over a period of 3 years, playing all the instruments himself. A hazy, late-night mood runs deep in the record's 13 tracks w/ a surprise around every corner.

Atlas Sound
Let the Blind Lead Those
PS, US VINYL VERSION. To make the 4 sides of the album complete, there are 6 NEW SONGS added!! One of the latest "true queer art punks" to emerge from the cracked pavement of southern suburban sprawl, this is the solo moniker of DEERHUNTER frontman/provocateur BRADFORD COX. This is, essentially, a bedroom album, a collage, mixing the garage rock & ambient electronic influences previously explored w/ Deerhunter in a new context, w/ newly explored recording techniques, mainly laptop based, learned w/ guidance from kranky artist Nudge's Brian Foote.

Atlas Shrugged
PS, US In March 2008, while ATLAS SOUND toured the U.S.A., chief Atlas Provocateur BRADFORD COX stopped off in Olympia, Wash. to lay down some tracks at the Dub Narcotic studio for this stellar Disco Plate release. Entirely off the cuff, Bradford made up the song on the spot, played all the instruments and improvised vocals. The session was engineered by CALVIN JOHNSON, who in his guise as Selector Dub Narcotic added his own flourishes, vocal and melodica, mixed the arresting B side "version". Another instant classic in our Dub Narcotic Disco Plate series of 7" 45 RPM records.

Belong
Same Places (Slow Version)
PS, US With "Same Places (Slow Version)," BELONG evinces a slow-motion transformation - plate tectonics, wired for sound. Aural mountains melt into seas; yet icy barrens yield to breathing jungles of detail. The single, sprawling track may evoke decay, dissolution and destruction, but underfoot are tendrils of inexplicable joy. Belong sings a lullaby of obliteration, and the paradox it embodies would make both Kevin Shields and Tony Conrad proud: crushing melancholia and shuddering euphoria, inexorably intertwined.

Bitcrush
Shimmer and Fade
PS, US Originally released in 2005, 'Shimmer and Fade' was a limited time download EP from n5MD's sub-label En:peg Digital. Within its forty-eight minutes, bass and guitar arose from the background to a place of prominence and carried the EP's melodic content. This change in form represented an important period in the natural evolution of the Bitcrush sound, a time that found Mike Cadoo transitioning from his post-industrial and IDM beginnings found on Enarc to the more ambient/post-shoegaze direction of 'In Distance.' After years of requests to bring Shimmer and Fade back, n5MD has chosen to re-release it as a re-mastered CD which contains four extra tracks not found on the original EP. Limited to 1000, this release will serve as a time capsule of what was yet to come.

Black To Comm
Fractal Hair Geometry
PS, GERMANY Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label, a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works "Fractal Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating & sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50 recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy 4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery, one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live) band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock, Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music, seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered neon-coloured collage artwork that is printed on special ultra-heavy cardboard stock.

Bruni, Carla
Comme Si de Rien N'Etait
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The title of Carla Bruni's 2008 album, Comme Si de Rien N'Etait (As If Nothing Had Happened), is a good joke. After all, since her last album Bruni fell into a whirlwind romance with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and ended up marrying him and becoming the "First Lady" of France. That's a pretty big "something," and indeed it isn't often that the romance of a singer and a president is chronicled on record as it is here -- though you need to be fluent in French to catch the details, since only her cover of '50s pop classic "You Belong to Me" (which is a witty nod to a semi-scandalous trip the couple took to Egypt and other exotic locales before they were wed) is in English. You don't need to know exactly what's going on lyrically, because the intimate-sounding arrangements on the ballads and the light and breezy sound of the more uptempo tunes clue you in that there is romance in the air. Along with the nice arrangements, the best thing about the album is Bruni's intimate and sultry singing. She can purr like a Gainsbourg girl, strut sassily, or croon quite tenderly -- sometimes all within the same song. Most of the time she sounds like you always hoped a '60s French bombshell would sound but never quite did (think Bardot or Birkin). Not surprisingly, Bruni appears totally in control throughout the album, which could be down to her having written almost all of the songs herself, or could be down to her new position in the world. Whatever the reason, it makes for quite an improvement over her previous album, No Promises, and fulfills the promise of her charming debut, Quelqu'un M'a Dit. It is probably the best album released by a "First Lady," but beyond that, it's a pleasant, sometimes compelling album by a singer/songwriter with some stories to tell and a lovely way of telling them."

Best start building the Marcus Garvey tug now.

Byrds
Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde
PS, US A key transitional touchstone in The Byrds' fabled canon, 1969's Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde was the next stop in the band's pioneering country-rock trajectory and the first album by the post-Gram Parsons lineup. With leader Roger McGuinn at the helm of a stellar new edition of the band featuring guitar god Clarence White, drummer Gene Parsons, and bassist John York, Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde sees The Byrds bridging the gap between the psychedelic flights of the group's mid-'60s albums and the down-home, country-based style developed only months earlier with Sweetheart of the Rodeo. In addition to containing strong McGuinn originals ("King Apathy III," "Old Blue"), more of the band's beloved interpretations of Bob Dylan classics ("This Wheel's on Fire" and a medley blending The Bard's "My Back Pages" with Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What You Want Me to Do"), and even a Gram Parsons collaboration (the bemusing "Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man," which cleverly celebrates The Byrds' love of country music while simultaneously taking a dig at small-minded rednecks), Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde also boasts two tracks composed by McGuinn for the obscure, racy '60s cult movie Candy. Mastered from the original Columbia Records analog master reels, Sundazed's exact reproduction of the original LP will have Byrdmaniacs everywhere soaring to high heaven!

Coldplay
Viva La Vida
PS, US When Coldplay sampled Kraftwerk on their third album, X&Y, it was a signifier for the British band, telegraphing their classicist good taste while signaling how they prefer the eternally hip to the truly adventurous; it was stylish window dressing for soft arena rock. Hiring Brian Eno to produce the bulk of their fourth album, Viva la Vida, is another matter entirely. Eno pushes them, not necessarily to experiment but rather to focus and refine, to not leave their comfort zone but to find some tremulous discomfort within it. In his hands, this most staid of bands looks to shake things up, albeit politely, but such good manners are so inherent to Coldplay's DNA that they remain courteous even when they experiment. With his big-budget production, Eno has a knack for amplifying an artist's personality, as he allows bands to be just as risky as they want to be -- which is quite a lot in the case of U2 and James and even Paul Simon, but not quite so much with Coldplay. And yet this gentle encouragement -- he's almost a kindly uncle giving his nephews permission to rummage through his study -- pays great dividends for Coldplay, as it winds up changing the specifics without altering the core. They wind up with the same self-styled grandiosity; they've just found a more interesting way to get to the same point. Gone are Chris Martin's piano recitals and gone are the washes of meticulously majestic guitar, replaced by orchestrations of sound, sometimes literally consisting of strings but usually a tapestry of synthesizers, percussion, organs, electronics, and guitars that avoid playing riffs. Gone too are simpering schoolboy ballads like "Fix You," and along with them the soaring melodies designed to fill arenas. In fact, there are no insistent hooks to be found anywhere on Viva la Vida, and there are no clear singles in this collection of insinuatingly ingratiating songs. This reliance on elliptical melodies isn't off-putting -- alienation is alien to Coldplay -- and this is where Eno's guidance pays off, as he helps sculpt Viva la Vida to work as a musical whole, where there are long stretches of instrumentals and where only "Strawberry Swing," with its light, gently infectious melody and insistent rhythmic pulse, breaks from the album's appealingly meditative murk. Whatever iciness there is to the sound of Viva la Vida is warmed by Martin's voice, but the music is by design an heir to the earnest British art rock of '80s Peter Gabriel and U2 -- arty enough to convey sober intelligence without seeming snobby, the kind of album that deserves to take its title from Frida Kahlo and album art from Eugene Delacroix. That Delacroix painting depicts the French Revolution, so it does fit that Martin tones down his relentless self-obsession -- the songs aren't heavy on lyrics and some are shockingly written in character -- which is a development as welcome as the expanded sonic palette. Martin's refined writing topics may be outpaced by the band's guided adventure, but they're both indicative that Coldplay are desperate to not just strive for the title of great band -- a title they seem to believe that they're to the manor born -- but to actually burrow into the explorative work of creating music. And so the greatest thing Coldplay may have learned from Eno is his work ethic, as they demonstrate a focused concentration throughout this tight album -- it's only 47 minutes yet covers more ground than X&Y and arguably A Rush of Blood to the Head -- that turns Viva la Vida into something quietly satisfying. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Doormouse
Stanley Yerkowski presents: Xylophone Jism as The Ridiculator
PS, UK So way, way, way back in 1994 Dan Doormouse first starting making hardcore techno in Milwaukee Wisconsin, then one day he stumbled upon a Sun Ra record and thus, "Breakcore" in the United States of America was born. He began the legendary Addict and Distort record labels soon after, and began releasing the most fucked up high intensity music the world has ever seen. The nephew of Lemme from motorhead (really, no shit!), Dan soon started performing solo and with his band Meat around Milwaukee in the Midwest of the US, gaining a massive following of renegades, speed freaks and social workers. Somehow, Mike Paradinas (Mu-ziq) took notice, and "Broken" was Dan's first major CD release in 2002 on the Planet Mu record label. Es
Sateenkaarisuudelma
PS, FINLAND Originally released as a 2LP by the (K-RAA-K)³ label in 2005, Sateenkaarisuudelma is Fonal label-head Sami Sänpäkkilä's fourth solo album under the name Es. The 2CD release is a trilogy containing three independent parts: "Sateenkaarisuudelma," "Maailmankaari" and "Pianokaari." Sateenkaarisuudelma was conceived from live songs performed on tour with Black Forest/Black Sea's Miriam Goldberg on cello, Jeffrey Alexander on guitar and effects, and Fursaxa's Tara Burke on vocals and keyboard. "Maailmankaari" I and II were recorded at Boston's WMBR radio station. Featuring rushing piano cadences and stabs, the sounds of burbling streams and static, softly chanting vocals, spectral, psychedelic ambience, dark koan/drones and endlessly looped guitar and electronics, this double album is a contemplative journey into a sound quite beyond freak-folk or Finnish quaintness. Other musicians include members of Kemialliset Ystävät, Kiila and Lau Nau.

Faint, The
Fasciinatiion
PS, US Their 1st album in 4 years through their own, newly-formed label. In certain ways, the album is the most mechanical & precise of the band's work: the vocals sound less human than ever before; the bass lines are more mangled, keyboards spiral & squeal out of control; electronic pings & stabs invade the melodies; the lyrical anxiety & disdain of previous albums pervades almost every song.

Foster, Josephine
This Coming Gladness
PS, UK This is Colorado-based Josephine Foster's (Born Heller, The Supposed) debut release for Bo Weavil Recordings, and her third full-length album. This Coming Gladness is the highly-awaited follow-up to 2006's A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing on Locust. This Coming Gladness is transcendental fin de siècle songs from one of the great unsung voices and songwriters of our modern times. Josephine Foster unites rarely united royal realms: self-penned operatic art songs cast in freely-rendered blues with electric guitars and drums beating the path along with harp and piano flourishes. She has a voice that was trained for opera, but creaks like ancient mountain folk floating out from a dusty Victrola. She surpasses any "weird-folk" labelling through the sheer timelessness of her songcraft -- making baroque balladry sound new yet remembered from some not-too distant shared American past. Joining her on this recording is electric guitarist Victor Herrero and drummer Alex Nielson.

Garnett, Gale and the Gentle Reign
S/T
PS, UK Like a lot of folk-pop performers who began their careers in the early- to-mid-'60s, by the end of the decade Gale Garnett seemed to have drifted into the rock and psychedelic scene, hooking up with the band The Gentle Reign to cut these two bizarre albums for CBS. Singer, journalist, actress (from cult 60s movie Mad Monster Party to My Big Fat Greek Wedding), star of Scopitones (check Youtube for some delights!), Gale Zoe Garnett is a marvel and a one-off. Listening to this album one has to wonder who is she taking on here? Bobby Gentry with her smoky voice and good looks, Grace Slick with her swooping rock stylings, or even Frank Zappa with the satirical tone and radio acting? Gale Garnett is a law unto herself. Rev-Ola is proud to bring you her two ndeservedly obscure late 60s albums with The Gentle Reign, a mere smidgen of the woman s immense and unique talent. ** Re-mastered in top Rev-Ola style by Norman Studio 3 Blake and with beautiful repackaging for a beautiful lady! ** Includes both amazing albums in their entirety! ** A must for all fans of out-there psych, sexy femme pop, avant-garde stylings and cult 60s artefacts!

Halstead, Neil
Oh! Mighty Engine (ON SALE)
PS, US New solo album from Slowdive/Mojave 3 mainman... In the late '90s Neil fronted a band called Slowdive, and after a couple of really good records they split. From there Neil formed his current band Mojave 3, who have released 4 records to date with a few more to come, we hope. Hard to find 2 bands with more critical accolades, and at the core of those bands was Neil and his songwriting. Oh! Mighty Engine is the name of Neil's newest solo record. It is a record that can handle excessive listens and seems to absorb every mood. It is really hard to find a record that can make you happy, sad, and can make you laugh all at once. He writes songs that are very personal to him, and then allows space for everyone to take their own meaning away from his lyrics ("Go skies and thrones and wings. And poetry and things" from the song "Elevenses"). Neil is an old soul and his newest solo record is exactly who he is. Welcoming, warm, clever and kind.

The Encyclopedia of Swedish Punk 1977-1987
PS, US Beautifully produced hardcover edition, 320 pages, full color. Kinda unbelievable in that same way that all "unbelievable" things are, I mean how does this book exist?! "Do you get nostalgic shivers down your spine when someone mentions the word punk? Are you a real geek when it comes to record collecting? Have you ever wondered what was out there -- deep in the underground of the Swedish punk scene? Then this book is for you! Find out everything you want to know about leading acts such as Ebba Grön, KSMB, Attentat, Anti Cimex, Mob 47, Asta Kask and Strebers. But also about every other band that ever released a record during the first ten years of punk music! In this book you will find all the facts: line-ups, home towns, biographies and complete, fully illustrated discographies with all sleeves depicted in full color. The discographies detail variations in vinyl pressings and covers, colored vinyl existence -- and just about everything else of interest for any serious collector of Swedish punk records. Finally, you get to see the full output from legendary bands such as Vicious Visions, Shas, Absurd, Kriminella Gitarrer, 57 KEZ, Kessler Jugend, Bad Boo Band and other similar acts. Over the years, early Swedish punk has obtained a cult reputation among music fans all over the world and some records will fetch ridiculously high prices at auctions. Those records were often pressed in a very small series by private labels. This book includes Premium Publishing's established price guide indication ratings, showing the current status among collectors for each and every entry! It has taken the author some ten years to collect the massive amount of information contained in this book. Premium Publishing is now very proud to present the definitive reference guide to all the recording acts during the first ten innovative years of the Swedish punk era!"

Keith
The Adventures Of Keith
PS, UK Keith scored a massive worldwide hit in 1967 with the record 98.6, which featured on our release Keith Ain't Gonna Lie (RPM 273), and is the subject of an entire column in this months Mojo Magazine. We are pleased to present Keith s 1969 self penned LP, The Adventures of Keith, which is reissued for the first time, and is also on CD for the first time. A striking set which tells the story of a boy, Charley Cinders, who is born [Waiting to Be]; he's blind [Alone On The Shore]; the trials and tribulations he has to deal with [Marstrand, China Clipper, The Problem, Elea-Elea, Trixon's Election] and ultimately his own demise [Charley Cinders]. In production the music speaks loudly of Keith's British pop influences and the arrangements twist and turn in such a way that they could only be from a songwriter enthralled with Sgt Pepper. All of which explains why The Adventures Of Keith fell through the cracks in mainstream 1969 America, only to become a highly sought-after soft rock collectable in recent years. Full story inside from a new interview with Keith (aka Barry Keefer).

Leinonen, Ville
Suudelmitar
PS, FINLAND Originally released on CD by Poko Records in 2004, this is the debut full-length release by Ville Leinonen. This is a musical journey to the shores of imagined inner lands and to the Scandinavian forests of hopes and dreams. These songs are moments of beauty from nature, cities and villages. It's autumn in Finland. Freezing wind blows from Itämeri -- the sea. Rain washes the streets of Helsinki. Suudelmitar expresses knowing and understanding foreign cultures as they appear in common everyday life and music. Sweet and nostalgic flamenco-styled guitar and strident, trilling flute evoke a troubadour, street musician vibe. Bossa nova grooves are carefully orchestrated with horns and male and female jazz duets, and there's even a surprising sitar jam. Laid-back indie lounge for world travellers riding on a joyful breeze.

Lights Out Asia
Eyes Like Brontide
PS, US Once a band has developed a sound that is undeniably theirs it can be difficult to push beyond those confines and expand the sound into new territory. Lights Out Asia set out to do just that and have succeeded in writing a record that was as much a sign of the times as it was an expansion of their aural bubble that has been their watermark. They have been called ethereal, post-shoegaze and sleep-rock, but on their third full length "Eyes Like Brontide" the band slides into a darker more ominous and less lucid dream than on previous efforts. The release is a stylistic shift from the sweet lullabies of their debut "Garmonia" (Sun Sea Sky) and the electronic drum driven post-shoegaze of 2007's "Tanks and Recognizers" (n5MD). The song dynamics on the album deserve special attention. For the first time in Lights Out Asia's history they have gone for broke with some of the most epic drum machine driven post-rock this side of the Pacific along with solemn disconnected passages of dream nourished sonic. The occasional floating vocal and dusty winding guitar they are known for are still present, but "Eyes Like Brontide" brings a whole new dimension to the Lights Out Asia ethos. Most importantly, the band has expanded upon its sound without throwing away the original blueprint or alienating its fan base. "Eyes Like Brontide" is recommended for fans of Hammock, Bitcrush, Robin Guthrie and Manual.

Lollipop Shoppe, The
Just Colour
PS, UK One of the MUST HAVE Garage Rock classics! Originally known as The Weeds and featuring Fred "Deep Soul" Cole, The Lollipop Shoppe sound amazingly modern! After The Weeds signed to UNI Records, their new manager, the infamous "Lord" Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bizarrely named bubblegum groups. The band's actual recordings are hardly bubblegum, but instead a mix of crunching garage rock and wild psychedelia. The album and its single, You Must Be a Witch, are period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie Angels from Hell. They were to regroup as The Weeds once out of "Lord" Tim's clutches, and Fred Cole was to lead cult band Dead Moon. But it is for this, the classic Just Colour, that The Lollipop Shoppe are justly acclaimed.

Machinefabriek
Dauw
PS, GERMANY Machinefabriek is the alias for Rutger Zuydervelt currently residing in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Since 2004 Zuydervelt has unleashed an uncountable number of self-released 3"CD's (his format of choice) in lovingly designed sleeves (all made by himself). In the past years some of these releases have been compiled into amazing albums such as "Slaapzucht" on the Root Strata label, "Weleer" on Lampse, the "Cello Recycling" 10"/CD on Type Records and "Bijeen" on Kning Disk. Recent collaborations with Stephen Vietiello (on the 12K label), Freiband, Steinbrüchel and other likeminded artists have expanded the horizon veritably. Machinefabriek's music has been remixed by the likes of Xela, Lesser, Svarte Greiner, Alva Noto, Pita, Kim Cascone, Ben Frost, Black To Comm and others. Only few Machinefabriek material has been recorded specifically for an album release but these have always been stand-outs in the vast catalogue. Both "Marijn" on Lampse and "Ranonkel" on Burning World Records were classic recordings, squeezing a large amount of what people love about Zuydervelt's music into one album, at the same time giving him the space to expand on new ideas. Likewise "Dauw" is one of Zuydervelt's most subtle & quiet yet refined works. Mainly built around small but gorgeous melodies of piano and guitar playing and the crackling sound of dusty vinyl samples, these songs slowly build into intensive hymn-like angel choirs of sheer heavenly beauty. Zuydervelt's output often has drawn comparisons to the likes of Fennesz, Godspeed, Arvo Pärt, Basinski, Tim Hecker, Phillip Jeck, Mogwai and Earth, which is certainly not all wrong and some of these have been influences in the early stages of his career but he has since developed a strong and individual language all of his own. Mastered by Guiseppe Ielasi with elegant artwork by Zuydervelt himself; metallic print on grey cardboard stock.

Meters
Kickback
PS, US No city marches to a funkier beat than New Orleans, and no Crescent City band ever upheld the joyous second-line tradition with prouder panache than the Meters. Their eight classic 1969-1977 albums for Josie, Reprise, and Warner Bros.--all of them available on Sundazed--signaled a new and exciting era of Big Easy funk. Now it's time to dig a little deeper: Kickback--in essence, the Meters album that never was--gathers precious rarities from the Meters' mid-'70s Fire On The Bayou/Trick Bag period, including previously unissued gems, newly unearthed alternate versions, and a treasure trove of blistering funk sure to delight fans of the legendary group.

Methadrone
Final Skull (Cassette)
PS, US Methadrone was an early moniker of joe brietenbach, who now grows organic drones under the name of gallows. before he unplugged the laptop, a small amount of output made it's way into the public realm in the form a few splits (w/ yes collapse, dance wounds, and wether) a c20 ("the sun cocaine" on lovers tapes) and a collab 12" w/ wether (forthcoming in snakefork/blue sky writing). these are the remaining tracks that have been collecting virtual dust in some moldy folder. four sides, five shots. oscillating, slightly processed, chloroformed doses that blend mechanical rhythms and natural elements with each other. packaged in clamshell cases. Michael Night
I'm Not Entirely Clear How I Ended Up Like This
PS, UK "I'm Not Entirely Clear How I Ended Up Like This" is the debut UK release for Dublin/Berlin beat combo Michael Knight and represents the logical progression in their ongoing musical argument that influences as diverse Beethoven, Bach and Bacharach can make compelling bedfellows. The result is 11 slices of the most irresistibly sophisticated pop music and, as further evidence of their genius, the album has been released with instrumental and vocal versions of each song. Imagine Modesst Mussorgsky backing Jens Lekman and you're halfway there. The presence of Brian O'Shaughnessy (The Clientele, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine) on mixing duties should give an indication of the sonic palette on offer: sweeping strings, haunting harmonies and dramatic mood swings. The Cd comes in a double Cd gatefold digipak, complete with liner notes & lyrics. REVIEWS: "Why Michael Knight aren't already huge is both baffling and beguiling; but sooner or later these songs will be discovered. I may as well say it in advance, then; I told you so". SoundsXP. "Supremely beautiful songs, which have a heart, a soul, a wry sense of humor and none of that upsetting necessity to make every lyrical couplet rhyme" In Dublin.

Music Go Music
Reach Out
PS, US Like a bolt from Zeus, MUSIC GO MUSIC have struck again with their new 12" single, 'Reach Out.' This outing finds them exploring a darker side of pop music; the place where Deep Purple's brute force meets the Carpenter's tragic wistfulness, where Blondie's power-hooks cross melodic swords with Meat Loaf's drama-rock theatrics. They've expanded their palette considerably, yet the sound is unmistakably theirs, and the magic of it points the way to the light at the end of the tunnel. 'Reach Out' is the monologue of a would-be savior, offering to lift us from the pit of despair. It treks from Logan's Run ambience to proto-metal riffing to disco-gallop to TV detective funk and back again.

Near The Parenthesis
L'Eixample
PS, US Near the Parenthesis follows up 2007's "Of Soft Construction" with "L'Eixample," Tim Arndt's most focused work to date. L'Eixample draws on inspiration gained during travels through Barcelona, Spain. Of particular interest was the innovative and sometimes peculiar modernist architecture of the L'Eixample district. In Catalunyan, L'Eixample literally means an extension, a strong symbolic parallel to the music found on Arndt's latest work which itself reflects an extension of the Near the Parenthesis' sound. While this collection begins where "Of Soft Construction" left off, it quickly migrates to an even calmer and more atmospheric experience. Through L'Eixample, Arndt has moved closer to an emotional apex and provides even greater melodic rewards.

Normanoak
Estra
PS, US NORMANOAK has another piece of vinyl to share with the world, a true follow up to last year's "A Double Gift of Tongues". This new album is called "Estra", named after a powerful horned goddess whom Normanoak has been busy invoking recently in small performance spaces around the country. Everything was recorded in his bedroom in Bloomington, Indiana, on three different tape machines. The music on "Estra" shows more variety than any of his previous efforts. Chugging rock songs burn up into soft, dark dirges that feature a uniquely made-up language code. Screaming minute-long hardcore songs fade into freaky, fucked instrumentals. There is even a song which curses the current state government, and their excessive logging of Normanoak's home forests of Southern Indiana. Throughout these 14 pieces, Normanoak takes on many personalities, such as his alter-ego Poisonoak. Over time the listener can begin to notice the shifts in perspective that the singer makes. Normanoak is more than just another musician. His work is pure sorcery at its most successful.

Interstellar Kustom Shop
PS, US Kustom Shop, it's a mindblowing ten-inch 33 1/3 RPM slab of wax by NRBQ that finds the revered fivesome latching onto the out-there New Thing jazz pioneered by intergalactic heroes Sun Ra & His Arkestra-and riding the music to universes beyond the beyond. Cut live in 1970 at Cincinnati's Ludlow Garage and Clinton Hollow in upstate New York, these revolutionary sounds, says NRBQ mainman Terry Adams "opened up new possibilities in rock 'n' roll. We had a thousand teenagers chanting along with us to 'Rocket #9." That stunning Sun Ra classic and his equally wonderful "Next Stop Mars"-extended experimental workouts that incorporate Adams' stellar originals "Venusian Sunset" and "Approach The Planet"-are guaranteed to send you clear out of this world!

Paavoharju
Laulu Laakson Kukista
PS, FINLAND This is the highly-anticipated second full-length release on Fonal Records from Finland's Paavoharju, a collective formed around two brothers -- Lauri and Olli Ainala and their troupe of associates. The group is a collective project of ascetic born-again Christians. Laulu Laakson Kukista (A Song About Flowers of the Valley) evokes the sounds of raindrops falling on a sheet metal roof melting together with an old television's random dot-pattern noise. Backwards pianos, backwards vocals, tilted organ and baroque beats lean against sweeping operatic soundscapes and gossamer back-porch folk singalongs. Leena Uotila's soft voice echoes in empty, dusty rooms. Cat-owls gather to the skies, apple trees are blooming and waves rock a barrel against the pier. Suddenly all this started to form esoteric mildew to cassette's magnetic tape. Mind-bending devotional rock-opera from the deepest Finnish forests. THE ONION: "Paavoharju is part of an intriguing scene that subsists in Finland but seems to hail from a spirit world where the natural and the ethereal blur. The latest of several notable offerings from the Finnish label Fonal, Laulu Laakson Kukista finds the group studiously adrift, with impressionistic glimmers of sound (bird chirps, static, warbly chimes) situated within delicate songs that draw on everything from acoustic folk to the kind of smeary polyglot pop favored by Animal Collective and especially Gang Gang Dance. The group functions as a collective led by two born-again Christians, but the sounds they make suggest Christians of an extraordinarily mystical sort."

PS, FINLAND Includes a 7" vinyl and a 40-page full-color book. Fricara Pacchu started out as a rapper in The Backdoor Funkers, as a member of Slow Convulsion, Rorererot, Avarus, etc., but not until techno-rock-trio Maniacs Dream was Pacchu able to find his shattered inner plectrum. Hence, the music on this 7" is the consequence of using a plectrum. On his earlier cassette releases: "Where do you go after you've single-handedly destroyed the entire canon of recorded psychedelic musics? Into techno, apparently.

Padden, Daniel
Pause for the Jet
PS, GERMANY Since 1995 Daniel Padden has been a member of Volcano The Bear, with several highly regarded album releases on Nurse With Wound's United Diaries label, Textile and Beta-Lactam Ring Records. After his move to Glasgow he started The One Ensemble Of Daniel Padden as an outlet for his solo recordings with releases on Catsup Plate, Secret Eye and Textile. When The One Ensemble slowly metamorphosed into a band of its own, Padden started to record his solo output under his birth name, with last year's "The Isaac Storm" on the Ultra Exzema label being the first seminal result. Over the years Padden has developed a strong fascination for obscure musics from all over the world (re his recent "Epiphanies" article for The Wire magazine): mouth organ love-songs from Thailand, The Ramayana Monkey Chant from Bali, Khene pieces from Laos; so-called world music from Burundi to Bulgaria. Combining these interests with his love for British Folk and Art Rock (This Heat, Robert Wyatt), Kraut Rock (Faust), Free Jazz, the surreal collage techniques of Nurse With Wound and the odd humour of The Residents, he has developed a totally unique and highly personal musical vision without ever sounding overambitious or directionless. Gorgeous song-writing is seamlessly transformed into pure fuzz or string drones, suddenly interrupted by some improvised reeds or collapsing percussion, all within the blink of an eye, and never losing its natural flow, "Pause for the Jet" is already an auspicious aspirant for our "Record of the Year".

Primal Scream
Beautiful Future
PS, UK New 2008 import-only album from The Primals! PITCHFORK: "Beautiful Future is an especially rich title coming from a band with such a sloppy past, but its concise, laser-focussed 10-song tracklist-- bearing the pop-golden touch of producers Paul Epworth (Bloc Party, the Rapture) and Bjorn Yttling (Peter Bjorn and John, Lykke Li)-- suggests Primal Scream's latest high is sobriety. The opening title track features the most joyous, clear-headed melody they've sung since Screamadelica's "Movin' on Up", but in a much different dressing. Here, their Exile-era Stones influence yields to the cheeky glam of Sparks, from the jaunty piano riff, hand claps and ascending chorus, to Bobby Gillespie's wry commentary on middle-class privilege: "Congratulations/ You're living the dream/ In the dead heart of the control machine."

Prints
Just Thoughts
PS, US Quickly following their debut full-length, PRINTS return to stir the pot with a little more pop, their usual dose of psychedlia and an intoxicating amount of dance. Once again produced at home by multi-instrumentalists Zac Nelson and KENSETH THIBIDEAU, the songs here were originally conceived as b-sides for a proposed single for "Too Much Water" from the group's eponymous debut. By the time three new songs were completed, they stood too strong on their own to be pushed out as b-sides, so the decision was made to forfeit the single and instead offer the songs as a stand-alone EP. Meanwhile, DFA cofounder and Hercules and Love Affair producer Tim Goldsworthy fired up his new alter-ego Thee Loving Hand for an epic super-funk remix of a pair of Prints tracks, "Pretty Tick" and "Meditation" (featuring, among other things, the funk bass skills of !!!'s Tyler Pope). To top it off, acclaimed visual artist Toben Seymour directed an eye-popping video for "Too Much Water," which is included here on the Enhanced CD portion of the disc.
