New 7" vinyl phonograph single from Chicago psych-pop troupe, featuring two non-album tracks: the jaunty "Everybody's Got A Collection" in alternate version, with the moody, noir-ish "Age of Metals" on the flip. White wax, matte black paper jacket, real posh.

New Releases

1-2-6
Graveyard Paradise
PS, US Hailing from the coldest, northernmost region of Norway, 1-2-6 (One-Two-Six) were inspired by the sounds of The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who and Bob Dylan, but blended these influences with an approach that was distinctly European. The brilliant original songwriting of Asa Krogtoft allied simple beat group arrangements and melodic psychedelic pop with a unique, often surrealistic poetic sensibility. This 28-track CD anthology includes their complete works: the Curtains Falling album, non-LP singles, demos and rarities, and both singles by Asa's post 1-2-6 band, Taboo, all from the original master tapes. Graveyard Paradise is the first time this material has been released outside of Norway. It includes an amazing array of original music: raw beat group rave-ups, dark folk-rock excursions, post-Revolver/Pepper psychedelic moves, gorgeous orchestrated pop, and heavier freakbeat sounds. The deluxe 16-page CD booklet is loaded with rare pix and full liner notes.

Crystal Stilts
S-T
PS, US Compiles their s/t 12" and the Shattered Shine 7". 6 tracks. "Crystal Stilts started in Brooklyn in 2003 as Brad Hargett and JB Townsend. Not really trying to be a 'band' they recorded and self-released their single Shattered Shine on their Feathery Tongue label in '04 with friend Sean Mafucci (producer of Gang Gang Dance, Psychic Ills, Kid Congo Powers, etc.) Early on, the Stilts played randomly in NYC opening for acts like Blood on the Wall, The Broke Revue, Cause Co-motion, and Psychic Ills. The single spent 7 weeks in WNYU's top 30 and peeked its little fuzzy head out in college radio charts around the country. With no shortage of lazy Jesus and Mary Chain and Factory Records comparisons, (more like VU, Felt, and Blue Orchids) in 2005-2006, they continued to play in New York with bands such as the Long Blondes, 1990s and The Monochrome Set and recorded a 4-song EP. Kyle Forrester (Ladybug Transistor etc., etc.) joined them at gigs playing organ as well. After a brief hiatus to record their back catalog for an upcoming LP (Slumberland), they adopted Andy Adler (who played bass on Eric Copeland of Black Dice's fuzz-pop outfit, Ninjas) to rock the bass. After opening for The Clean in November, Frankie Rose (Vivian Girls) waltzed into their life to play the stand-up drums and complete the equation."

Daedelus
Love to Make Music To
PS, US Digitized, cleaned of crackles & pops, & shorn of 45 mins of detuned primitive oscillator noise, it's as strange as the day it was 1st performed & as liable to bring on what one can only describe as "sexual fever." To ease the listener through- & hopefully hold the fever at bay- this version feat. commentary from a number of leading scientists incl. Om'mas Keith & Taz of the SA-RA Foundation, plus Dr. Michael Johnson, Prof. N'fa, Paperboy (Mphil), Dr. Erika Rose, & Prof. Laura Darling. Of more than academic interest, this will appeal to all aficionados of Very Very Late Victorian Music.

Damon & Naomi
More Sad Hits [re-issue]
PS, US This remastered reissue of their 1st album- which was created as a swan song response to the dissolution of Galaxie 500, this was recorded w/ Galaxie producer Mark Kramer, & is just as cutting a reaction to the sinister allure of fame as it was when released back in 1992. The album was so strong, that a presumed one-off led to a long relationship w/ Sub Pop Records, who offered to put out future releases after hearing what the duo could accomplish on their own.

Dark Captain Light Captain
Circles
PS, US This softly psychedelic sound is mesmeric, delicate, & slightly twisted. An added brass section & the legendary beats of Chin Keeler of Quickspace fame give the songs a gently pulsing, almost Can-like drive. Recent shows throughout London have seen the band getting deeper & stronger, weaving the songs into a haunting web of acid-tinged folk w/ sweet harmonies, chiming guitars, spaced-out brass, & touches of electronic deviance.

Del Fuegos, The
Boston, Mass. [re-issue]
PS, US This Boston band's best album, in our opinion, originally released in 1985, now remastered. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Building from the blue-collar foundation of The Longest Day, the Del Fuegos crafted another winning record of straight-ahead rock & roll with their second album, Boston, Mass. While the record isn't as bracing as their debut, it features a better, more consistent selection of songs, and the group's sound is clean, professional and hard-rocking, making the album an infectious and entertaining, if unassuming, collection of roots rock."

Del Fuegos, The
Longest Day [re-issue]
PS, US First time ever on CD for this acclaimed mid-80s Boston band's 1984 debut album originally released on Slash. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The Del Fuegos were proud sons of Boston, Massachusetts, but you might not have guessed that by listening to their debut album, The Longest Day, which mixed the swaggering thunder of heartland garage rock with the rootsy twang of Dixie-fried rockabilly and roots-conscious rock 'n' roll... The Longest Day isn't the sort of album likely to change the way you look at rock and roll, but it will probably remind you why you love the stuff, and that's more than enough reason to slap it into your stereo and turn it up."

Flied Egg
Dr. Siegel's Fried Egg Shooting Machine
PS, JAPAN Part of a new Universal Japan 70s rock reissue series, called Naked Line. Legit issues, from masters, midline pricing. Reissue of the first Flied Egg album, originally issued by Japanese Vertigo in 1972. An offshoot of the short-lived Strawberry Path, Flied Egg were a trio of Shigeru Narumo (guitar, keyboards), Hiro Tsunoda (drums, vocals) and Masayoshi Takanaka (bass). They played a hogwash of progressive hard rock with pop-like flourishes all featuring English vocals. Semi namby at times, but the album have a very nice psuedo Dali-cover painting. And what band to ever appear on the Vertigo roster had a better name than Flied Egg?

Food Brain
Social Gathering
PS, JAPAN Part of a new Universal Japan 70s rock reissue series, called Naked Line. Legit issues, from masters, midline pricing. Legendary Japanese underground rock item, first released by Polydor Japan in 1970. Has been reissued a couple times before, including on P-vine. Social Gathering is the lone album by the quartet of Shinki Chen (pre-Speed, Glue & Shinki), Luis Kabe (ex-Golden Cups), Hiro Yanagida (ex-April Fool, pre-Love Live Life +1) & Hiro Tsunoda (ex-Jacks, pre-Strawberry Path). Musically they were an instrumental quartet led by the guitar histrionics of Shinki Chen and the organ swoosh of Hiro Yanagida, gusting forth with a sub-bass low-ball thunder. Progressive-psych jamming with a similar enthusiasm for the attributes of "heavy" as their contemporaries, Guru Guru. There also some free-form excursions and unexpected insanity at the end. People's expectations are always a bit out of whack on this kind of stuff, but this is a very nice period piece and a powerful document. "The drugs must have been pumping fast and furious. This is a heavy over the top psychedelic extravaganza." --Ken Golden, The Laser's Edge.

Gas
Nah Und Fern
PS, GERMANY 2nd pressing now available! The Kompakt label presents the work of Wolfgang Voigt's Gas -- a remastered deluxe package that includes all four of his Mille Plateaux albums: Gas (1996), Zauberberg (1997), Königsforst (1998) and Pop (2000). Wolfgang Voigt, in the past known under a great many pseudonyms such as Mike Ink, Studio 1 or Grungerman, is the driving force behind the rise of Cologne minimal techno and also Kompakt's co-founder and co-owner. In the 1980s, Voigt began working under a concept he named BLEI -- extracting elements from classical, polka, brass music, electronic pop and German schlager sounds to form a distinguished and unique pop music style that would fit in with the subculture at that time. In the early 1990s, influenced by techno, Voigt began to experiment with a timbal marching through strongly alienated, free-floating string loops. These elegiac tracks, their lack of beginning and end, their intoxicating, smooth and partly amorphous structure sounded to him like evaporating gas and thus -- Gas was born. Gas is the vision of a sonic body between Schönberg and Kraftwerk, between French horn and bass drum. Gas is Wagner goes glam rock, and Hansel and Gretel on acid. Gas takes you on a seemingly endless march through the woods into the discotheque. Reducing the material to its basic aesthetic structure by using different zoom, loop and alienation techniques, he releases it from its original meaning and context, creating a kind of aesthetic essence, a cave to get lost inside. There are one or two new tracks and versions, but both Voigt and Jörg Burger decided to keep remastering light, maintaining Gas' purity and authenticity. This 4CD box comes in a special and stylish collector's format, including 4 small artwork prints.

Hayman, Darren
Great British Holiday Songs EPs (CD+DVD)
PS, UK Between 2005 and 2007, former Hefner front man, Darren Hayman released four EPs detailing his British Holidays. Darren would take ukuleles, minidisks and Casio keyboards to caravan parks, Butlins and B and Bs. The songs are sweet and tender, lo-fi vignettes about lost youth, faded photographs and half-understood Britishness. As well as painting a loving portrait of places we may have thought forgotten, the songs also reveal Haymans own fears of growing older and wanting to pull on the reigns of time. All the sold out EPs are featured here as well as 3 newly recorded cover versions of famous holiday songs; V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N. by Connie Francis, Holiday Road (the theme from National Lampoons Vacation) by Lyndsey Buckingham and Margate by Chas and Dave. Henske, Judy & Jerry Yester
Farewell Aldebaran
PS, UK Timely reissue of this late '60s folk/psych classic from husband and wife team Jerry Yester and Judy Henske. Yester had previously enjoyed an element of fame courtesy of his stint with The Loving Spoonful, but following the band's demise in 1969, he set about producing this little gem with acclaimed folk singer Henske and a bunch of pals which were said to have included Ry Cooder and David Lindley. Farewell Aldebaran, which is often heralded as one of the most proficient and creative albums of its genre, with Henske's incredible range of vocal styles (during her short solo career she had effortlessly made the transition from comedian to folk singer and then onto an accomplished rock singer) elevating the album to a higher plane. Her mind-blowing vocals on the opening track, the hard-fuzz "Snowblind," gives an early clue to Henske's talent and range, and although this particular vocal style only features on the one song, the sheer diversity of her singing makes every track on this highly original and experimental album a unique experience. Yester and Henske attempted to scale the same artistic heights with their next collaboration, Rosebud, but sadly, it was not to be, and Yester, fearing that he had already peaked as a musician, turned his attention to production, working with other Californian bands and singers of the time including The Association, The Turtles, Tim Buckley and Tom Waits. Housed in a numbered, limited edition unique card wallet.

Hood, Graham
Empty Pocket Blues: The Life & Music of Clive Palmer
PS, UK "Empty Pocket Blues is the biography of Clive Palmer, a beatnik banjo player who began playing skiffle, jazz and folk in 1950s London, honed his skills by busking in Paris and then moved to Scotland (influencing the young Billy Connolly, among many others) to co-found the legendary Incredible String Band. Leaving them after their first album in 1966 to hitchhike to Afghanistan, he had many adventures and the occasional brush with the law. In the early '70s he was part of the thriving Cornish folk scene, where he arguably produced his best work, including two albums with Clive's Original Band (C.O.B.) which have influenced a whole new generation of musicians, notably Devendra Banhart. Clive is still playing and releasing albums to this day, a bona-fide musical treasure. The book contains much new information on the early days of the Incredible String Band and Clive's years in Cornwall. Billy Connolly, who greatly admires Clive's work (and gave him a banjo!), contributes the foreword; the book will appeal to those with an interest in both the musical and the social history of the period." 224 pages, paperback. Full-color cover, b/w illustrations throughout.

Meneguar
The In Hour
PS, US Switching instruments and experimenting with recording techniques, Meneguar has cooked up a totally unique (and surprising) record. The In Hour channels the spontaneity and aesthetics of Swell Maps, the pop hooks of The Zombies, and lyrical collage of Guided By Voices. Everything was home recorded at their little Xanadu in Brooklyn, Rear House, home base to the Woodsist label and the changing roster of Meneguar's alter egos (Woods, Shepherds). Only six months since their last record, The In Hour represents a serious departure that still holds true to the band's undeniable pop sensibility.

Songs & Instrumentals From The Death Bottom Slide
PS, US Robert Horton once again joins his long-time collaborator & fiddler-extraordinaire, Hal Huges who provides stunning fiddle work that is a perfect slice of Americana along w/drops of mandolin & banjo to light the leaf-covered path. The album sounds like an unearthed document from 75 years ago, left to rot in a bourbon cellar in Tennessee. Music like this doesn't just appear, it takes time to properly age. This is drone. This is raga. This is bluegrass. This is folk. This is free-jazz. This is pure, dancing-in-the-rain psychedelia

Negativland
Thigmotactic
PS, US Moving in a very different direction than other recent releases, & w/ a decidedly surreal bent, this particular collection of 15 songs & 2 instrumentals was written, composed & performed by Mark Hosler, w/ contributions from the rest of the group. While the trademark sound of found audio elements is collaged through-out, the cutting up here is also in the lyrics, created by combining dream journals, bits of advertisements, found poems, automatic writings, stream of consciousness, old National Geographic articles, & more. THE ONION A.V. CLUB: "Thigmotactic's schizophrenic blend of nitrous-oxide psychedelia, glitchy electronica, and bent indie falls somewhere between Yerself Is Steam-era Mercury Rev and The Halo Benders, providing an appropriately quirky background for his stream-of-consciousness lyrics about waffles, cows, and Herb Alpert."

Oddfellows Casino
The Absence of Birds
PS, UK EP & Film. Pickled Egg Records are pleased to announce the release of 'The Absence of Birds', a four song EP by Oddfellows Casino, combined with a short film by Brighton-based film maker Toby Amies, which features an original soundtrack by Oddfellows Casino. 'The Absence of Birds' showcases four new David Bramwell compositions, exhibiting lush orchestral arrangements with a nod towards late-period Talk Talk, and featuring Oddfellows' usual eclectic array of guests, including Stereolab's Simon Johns on bass, Giant Leap guitarist and composer Andrew Philips on guitar and percussion, Clearlake's Jason Pegg on organ, and Bevis Frond guitarist Paul Simmons on bass and guitar. The CD comes complete with a twenty minute film 'The Ballad of Oddfellow', which stars Drako Oho Zarhazar - former Salvador Dali model, actor in films by Andy Warhol and Derek Jarman, and the recent subject of a Radio 4 documentary, 'The Man Whose Mind Exploded.' This sepia-tinted curio follows the demise of legendary Victorian freakshow host, Ambrose Oddfellow, as drink, tragedy and the advent of picture-houses force him to host phony séances for the gullible aristocracy of Brighton. But who knows what can happen when dabbling with the forces of darkness... The cast also includes Michael Attree (former world moustache championship holder), Dave Mounfield (portly comedian and nice chap) and the legendary Heidi Heels. The film features an original soundtrack of Oddfellows Casino songs, and was directed by filmmaker and MTV/ Lonely Planet host Toby Amies. Oddfellows are currently working on their third album, 'The Haunting of Ladybower and Other Tales' - a collection of new songs with a supernatural theme. In May 2008, the group performed their biggest gig to date, at St George's Church in Brighton.

Shizuka
Live/Traditional Aesthetics
PS, JAPAN Shizuka were THE great lost-in-action group of the Tokyo underground psych scene during the early to mid-'90s. Led by doll-maker Shizuka, and with ex-Fushitsusha alumni Maki Miura and Jun Kosugi on hand, they created some of the most fragile and intense acid-rock of their time, but remained largely undocumented and under appreciated. The gig documented on this CD, recorded at Bears in Osaka in 1995, was long whispered of amongst the cognoscenti. It catches them at a near-divinely inspired peak of fucked-up narcotic bliss. Shizuka's uncanny vocals and tremulous sense of timing washing like brown sugar over fluid nebulae of guitar and drum nirvana, peaking and churning in perfect, weightless filigrees of light, cosmic cold and invisible motion. Miura's guitar playing is just jaw-dropping. Booklet includes lyrics in Japanese and English." -- Alan Cummings.

Simmons, Jeff
Straight Years: Naked Angels/Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up
PS, GERMANY "This 2CD set presents the Straight label years of Zappa's multi-talented 'sideman,' Jeff Simmons. In 1968 in Seattle, Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen were in the audience after his sound check, and were listening to 'Easy Chair,' Jeff's group. Fascinated by his talent, he was signed to Straight records. Both albums, Lucille Has Messed My Mind Up and Naked Angels were recorded in 1969. CD #1 The Lucille album, was produced by Chris Huston (Led Zeppelin II, Undertakers, Young Rascals) and Frank Zappa under the synonym 'La Marr Bruister,' who wrote the title track, played lead guitar on two tracks and co-wrote 'Wonderful Wino.' Lucille... contains 10 catchy and heavy blues-rock and folk, Jeff is playing a hard-driven and groovy bass, piano, organ and accordion and singing in a style similar to that of Jack Bruce with Cream. Simmons presented a brace of strong, harmonically-sophisticated songs that have some of the explosive, multi-hued impact of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. (Ben Watson, excerpted from Frank Zappa: 'The Negative Dialectics of Poodle Play')... 'No one knows it... not even him... but someday that kid's gonna be a great R&B singer' (Frank Zappa). Jeff was in the Mothers of Invention at the time of 200 Motels, Jeff also played rhythm guitar on Waka/Jawaka and clown about with Frank and George Duke on Roxy & Elsewhere. CD #2 Naked Angels, a soundtrack for a biker movie, is a sequence of mostly instrumentals that combines melody and fuzz guitar with heavy, psychedelicate surf-rock. This 2CD set is presented in a 20p. booklet with all original artwork and lots of memorabilia from Jeff's vaults (posters, cool photos, liner notes). The music was carefully re-mastered to sound today as fresh as it was 40 years ago, plus two bonus tracks. Lucille was rated in Mojo Magazine as the 2nd best release on Straight Records. Strange Things Art Magazine mentions it as 'the closest in execution to contemporary Mothers,' but Jeff's individual talent made this album an all-time masterpiece. Never has a musician in psychedelic rock'n'roll captured the essence of deep emotion and soul like the sideman!'"

Two years ago "Thomégränd" was my song of the summer, and if this new single is reflective of their highly anticipated new album Döda Fallet, then I wouldn't be surprised if a track would end up taking the prize again. Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 12TH)
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

Ambarchi, Oren
A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 22ND)
PS, US There is a vivid breadth to the guitar deconstructions of Australian OREN AMBARCHI. Sometimes his work takes a delicate lilt; it can also dive into dark and deep pools of sound when he joins cowl-core ensembles Sunn O))) (with Stephen O'Malley) and Burial Chamber Trio (with Greg Anderson). Whether with those bands, solo, or in collaboration with luminaries ranging from Mike Patton and John Zorn to Christian Fennesz, he consistently reroutes his instrument into zones of arch, alien abstraction. "A Final Kiss on Poisoned Cheeks" offers a dizzying gaze straight into a chasm of extreme frequencies - paint-peelingly high and bowel-churningly low - all set atop a sub-strata of menace, angst, and contemplative beauty.

Astro/Hiroshi Hasegawa
The Echo From The Purple Dawn (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 22ND)
PS, US The Echo From The Purple Dawn is a brand new full length from C.C.C.C. member Hiroshi Hasegawa's solo project Astro. Using a battery of oscillators, ring modulators and field recordings Hasegawa has created an engaging and versitile album that masterfully drifts between spaced out analog dream drone and a more extreme form of harsher droning. As Astro Hasegawa is able to combine some of the harsher influence of C.C.C.C. into the world of analog space music to create the signature sounds of Astro. Included is a live track recorded at a festival at the Tokyo Keizai niversity organized by Tetsuo Kogawa. Cover art designed by Important. ASTRO is Hiroshi Hasegawa's solo project. He is a founding member of the Japanese noise group C.C.C.C. Born in 1963, Hasegawa began his improvisation with his voice and drums. In 1990, he made the group C.C.C.C. around the concept of improvised mass-noise with a very loud sound. Members included Mayuko Hino, Ryuichi Nagakubo, Fumio Kosakai. Hasegawa began his solo unit ASTRO with analog synthesizers in 1993 and continued playing in C.C.C.C. Black To Comm
Fractal Hair Geometry (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 29TH)
PS, GERMANY Black To Comm is the solo venture of Dekorder label boss Marc Richter. With two and a half albums released on his own label he has established himself as one of the most prolific drone artists out there with a forthcoming album on the American Digitalis label, a collaborative CD with Datashock on Ikuisuus, a 7" on the Irish Trensmat label and a collaboration with Xela in the works "Fractal Hair Geometry" is Richter's most refined and original work to date, picking up where the electrifying drone works of his monumental Double-LP left off. Like the last records this album is centered around recordings of a variety of vintage organs. While "Wir können leider..." often featured pure harmonium sounds and spacious recordings of chuch organ and mellotron, the new album opts for a more electronic, effects-laden sound, sending an old Farfisa Compact Deluxe and Casio SK-5 through an armada of analogue & digital effects pedals. The results are massive one-chord drones layered into dense & ecstatic, flickering & pulsating clusters of psychedelic electronic sound. Additional wordless vocal effects, hyperventilating & sizzling drum machines and hypnotic violin and guitar noises make for a hyperactive sound that never stands still even though most of the music is pure drones (sometimes consisting of more than 50 recording layers). Decidedly simple but gorgeous melodies shine through the mist from time to time, making a Black To Comm record always much more accessible than your average drone album. There's even a heavy 4/4 bass drum smuggled into a track dedicated to the late Leigh Bowery, one of the most enigmatic creative figures of the mid-80's UK club scene (and singer of Minty). Guests include Jonna Karanka (aka Kuupuu) on piano, Guido Möbius on trumpet and current Black To Comm (live) band members Renate Nikolaus on violin and Ulf Schütte (of Datashock, Aosuke, etc.) adding electronic sounds. Along the lines of the music, seminal German artist Oliver Ross has created a massive multi-layered neon-coloured collage artwork that is printed on special ultra-heavy cardboard stock.

Bodies Of Water
A Certain Feeling (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 22ND)
PS, US One year after the self-release of the acclaimed "Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink," BODIES OF WATER have created another full-length offering. "A Certain Feeling," their first record for SECRETLY CANADIAN, was written, arranged and recorded in David & Meredith Metcalf's house in the Northeast L.A. neighborhood of Highland Park. The strains that one can hear running through all of Bodies of Water's music are fully exhibited here; instantly familiar melodies, rich harmonic color, expansively deft arrangements, and compositions that ebb, flow, and double back on themselves in cathartic synchronicity. Though no two songs sound entirely similar, it's a cohesive that comes out feeling like the anthemic prog/gospel/psychedelic/kraut-tribal movie score that Ennio Morricone and Phil Spector never got around to collaborating on. The choral hugeness that typified "Ears Will Pop" still rears its emphatic head, only here it is more often held in reserve while we marinate in each movement before being pulled along into the next passage of the narrative. "A Certain Feeling" is the sound of a group carving out an ever-evolving, but distinct aesthetic niche for themselves The singing, playing, compositions, lyrical themes (obsessive meta-physicality/spiritual surrender/human frailty) are unmistakably theirs. "A Certain Feeling" is a step forward, but assuredly filled with the same beautiful urgency that we have come to expect from them.

California Oranges
Imperial Hearts (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 22ND)
PS, US Our Sacramento, CA indie-pop all stars return with a gem of a pop/rock album full of hooky choruses, call and response guitars and a super tight power-pop rhythm section. A pow-pow-powerful good good feeling! Just as you'd expect from this seasoned music family. Bask in the summer sun with the fourth album from the golden state's California Oranges and a healthy dose of the sunshine power pop they're known for. Underlying the power is a healthy dose of pop: Delicately concocted, contemplative songs exploring life's ups and downs. The quintet has hit their stride on Imperial Hearts. The record features the same line up as their 2005 release Souvenirs: John Conley (Holiday Flyer), Verna Brock (Rocketship, Beanpole, Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), Ross Levine (Sinking Ships), Katie Haley (Holiday Flyer, Sinking Ships), and Matt Levine (Sinking Ships). The album was jointly produced by the California Oranges and Dana Gumbiner (Night Night, Deathray). Imperial Hearts was mixed by long time friend of the band, producer/engineer, Eric Stenman (Saves the Day, The Comas, The Cab). The California Oranges construct songs filled with, "soaring boy/girl harmonies, rapid-fire licks of squeaky clean and buzz saw dirty guitar work, consistently up-tempo beats, and melodies that would make tone deaf kitten haters want to sing along" --Popmatters. "Power pop has rarely sounded as sweet." --Treblezine. TRACK LIST: 1. Brand New Spine, 2. We've Got Time, 3. Travel Writer, 4. Anywhere USA, 5. I Still Hold On, 6. Silver Shoes, 7. Feel Better, 8. Clientele, The
That Night, A Forest Grew (PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE JULY 29TH)
PS, SPAIN This is the third, and last, of a trilogy of E.P.s the Clientele have recorded for Acuarela. They have always used the Acuarela E.P.s as a way to stretch out between albums, to create a through-the-looking-glass version of the band that shadows the better-known history of their albums. 'Ariadne' experimented with drones and minimalism; 'The Lost Weekend' stretched the foggy sound of their debut to epic proportions. In contrast "That Night, a Forest Grew' is the most commercial and -shockingly- danceable thing they've ever recorded. Part Bacharach, part Television, part Orange Juice, the E.P. shares the pristine clarity, light and shade of 'God Save the Clientele', but adds a new element of summer pop perfection. This is The Clientele as a hazily remembered 1970s cartoon series, all distanced off-key colors; imaginary summer hits, radio waves beamed in from a dream-discotheque.
