Parasol New Arrivals • August 19, 2008

Howdy folks,

Well, I returned from my short-lived "get away" Saturday evening and instead of feeling utterly sleep deprived, I'm actually doing quite well thanks to the ridiculous amount of coffee I've been consuming. Other than that, Paul has embarked on his spiritual quest across land and sea, so Angie and I will be pulling double duty in the mailorder until he returns to us unscathed.

Let's highlight a few of the new releases, shall we? Ok, away we go. You most definitely need to check the new Tindersticks “Hungry Saw [import]”, Mercury Rev “Yerself Is Steam/Lego My Ego [expanded re-issue]”, Sun Araw, Neilson Hubbard, Human Eye, Milk ‘n Cookies, and Pets.

Well then, have a look at the list below and if anything catches your eye give me a holler.

The Eagle Has Landed,

Roy

Parasol Mail Order Pick of the Week

Neilson Hubbard "I Love Your Muscles" CD $9.50 (Media Creature)
Finally an official, nationwide release for former Parasol recording artist (and This Living Hand and Strays Don’t Sleep dude) Neilson Hubbard’s latest solo album, the follow-up to Why Men Fail (2000) and Sing Into Me (2003), and every bit worth the wait! While the title seems smirky, the songs are anything but: aching melancholy pop that is as intimate and heart-rending as anything that precedes them in his canon. Pure pathos from one of the sweetest men on Earth, great to have him back!

Thrillsville: Parasol staff's weekly picks

Jim picks: Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild (OST) CD It's been long time since I could even listen to Eddie Vedder but his solo, mostly acoustic songs for an pretty awesome motion picture has been my Summer soundtrack. The perfect score for large-scale gardening projects, patio re-reconstruction and gutter painting, along with countless High Lifes, Red Stripes and Mothership Wits.

Roy picks: Bongripper - Hate Ashbury (Cassette)

Angie picks: CSS - Donkey CD I heard a CSS song on the local college radio station and fell in love. It's everything I love the most.
Like 2008s answer to the Go-Go's (in a really good way!) HOOT

Paul is on tour with: Matthew Sweet - Sunshine Lies (ON SALE / PRE-ORDER: SALEABLE AUGUST 26TH)

31Knots
Worried Well
PS, US Further explorations of "post-apocalyptic Vaudevillian punk" and demented pop, but with a twist. Plainly stated, 31Knots hasn't moved in a new direction so much as they've ripened to full maturity, evolved into the creature they're meant to be. Previous efforts are just as tightly wrapped, just as fierce and incendiary. But something is different. Something here is new. It deserves to be called out as thought provoking and well written music in a time when substance is quickly giving way to music of commerce and palatability. There is no band like 31Knots and Worried Well finds them at the full height of their powers.

Action Biker
Hesperian Puisto
PS, SWEDEN It really is time for Action Biker's first solo album! It has now been six years since she emerged as an artist doing fun and popular live shows and releasing CD-R's in the indie pop scene of Gothenburg, Sweden, which included people like Jens Lekman and The Honeydrips. Since then, Sarah Nyberg Pergament has been involved in other projects, such as Flow Flux Clan, Kissing Mirrors and The Dreamers, whose record "Day For Night" has received great acclaim from different places around the world. Over the years, Sarah has also performed lots of Action Biker shows (some, as an opening act for Le Tigre and The Embassy), contributed to recordings with Lars Blek (The Field), Differnet and The Honeydrips, and all this time, new recordings with Action Biker have popped up on compilations and singles. In brief, when "Hesperian Puisto" finally is released, it means the début of someone with a lot of experienceŠ The record is named after the Hesperian park in Helsinki, Finland, where Sarah lived for a while. She describes her music as baroque on synthesizers. It is pop music built on complex naivety - altogether very accessible music with distinct vocals and a crispy, sweet, analogue sound. Two great-looking videos are also included on the CD. References and Influences: Young Marble Giants, Broadcast, Dislocation Dance, Moondog, Virna Lindt, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Antena, Francoise Hardy, Saint Etienne, Brian Eno, Ghost Box, Stereolab, Fred Astaire, Maurice Ravel, ESG, Komeda, Cluster, Flying Lizards, Syd Barrett, The Passions, St Christopher, John Barry, Can, Human League, Colleen, Marine Girls, Eric Dolphy, Telex, George Delerue, The Wake, Kraftwerk, Lori & The Chameleons, Differnet.

Alla
Es Tiempo
PS, US Pronounced ay-ya, this Chicago-based Mexican-American three-piece are laying the blueprint for a new brand of Latin psychedelic pop. As vocal melodies chime, discreet electronic effects swirl around the mix & strings arc across the skyline at the subtlest of angles. The group has forged a distinctive sound encompassing some of their favorite styles from the last four decades: German Krautrock experiments, Motown flourishes, Brazilian Tropicalia, cosmic jazz & symphonic 60's pop of Brian Wilson & Phil Spector- all while paying homage to their Mexican musical heritage.

Athletic Automaton/Made In Mexico
Split
PS, US This split is the audio debut of ATHLETIC AUTOMATON and MADE IN MEXICO. This pressing sports a fashionable cover designed by none other than MATT BRINKAMAN. The songs? ATHLETIC AUTOMATON delivers "Death On An Escalator" (with guest vocals by J RYAN of SIX FINGER SATELLITE) and "Sweatpants No Underwear," while MADE IN MEXICO contribute the debut recordings of "Infrared Eye," "Wounded Knees" & "International Zombie." Athletic Automaton features STEPHEN MATTOS (ex-ARAB ON RADAR) and provide two tracks of droning, distortion-sopped lapsteel guitar set to a repetitive battery of seasick lurching rhythms. Made in Mexico features JEFF SCHNEIDER (ex-Arab On Radar). Made in Mexico provides the listener with scratchy riffs accompanied by REBECCA MITCHELL's dispatch-from-the-edge shrieks. Meanwhile the percussion and bass remain loose and limber enough to tackle the arrangements dynamics with no wave jazz-like focus.

Aughra
Proof of Dark Matter | Light the Lights
PS, US Instrumental in nature, the album succinctly captures the duality Eyestone's solo work has steadily become known for:
equal parts of both eerie, creeping horror-movie-inspired isolationist chillers & soaring, feel-good, dynamic melody. The end result is an engrossing foray into a world of instant nostalgia, haunting introspection, & intangible inspiration from shadowy sources.

Baker, Aidan
Green & Cold
PS, US Green & Cold is the strength of strings proved by AIDAN BAKER (NADJA). Yes, when gazed upon, these patent leather shoes really do reflect up. However, G&C accomplishes much more than throwing loveless lights back up to heaven. Baker's six strings ring out like Echoes in a Shallow Bay in the year 4 A.D., but vox and drone are couched in subtly weird production. Baker's voice is calmly pleasing, and like Vini Reilly or Henry Frayne (Lanterna), his vocals often seem more like another frequency/rhythm than specific words. Edition of 300 numbered copies.

Bellafea
Cavalcade
PS, US BELLAFEA call Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The rich, independent music history and their subsequent Southern upbringing play obvious roles in structuring their individuality. Bellafea teems with the punk spirit of local townies Superchunk, while the trialing dissonance of Polvo shine through in their string parts. There is an earnest aggression in their music, perhaps channeled from their struggles with the vastly conservative Southeastern United States-the patriarchal, Bible-belt countryside where they grew up. There is resistance, and there is also a secular nod to their heritage and its inevitable and inspiring impact on their songwriting.

Bipolaroid
'E(i)ther Or'
PS, US Amid the local masses of hornblowers, washboard scratchers and swamp-pop stars, Ben Glover stands out like, well, the one guy making pastoral, British Invasion psych/rock in a southern jazz-and-zydeco province. His band Bipolaroid made a grand entrance with 2003's Transparent Make-believe, likely the most authentic Syd Barrett shrine ever to emerge from the muddy banks of the Mississippi. Reborn as a five-piece band, the group finally follows up its singular gem with an album whose mark remains the same but whose aim has shifted slightly. E(i)ther Or is an altogether messier, more chaotic affair " intentionally so, Glover might add. The songwriter sings in a blurry slur, with a sleepy, faux-English accent that frames vintage-sounding instruments and paisley melodies in a perfectly hazy Pink Floyd daydream.

Booker T. & the MG's
Green Onions
PS, US Propelled by Booker T. Jones' smoky organ and the funky guitar bursts of Steve Cropper, "Green Onions"-the first chart-topper by Booker T. & The MG's-slithered across the 1962 airwaves, followed immediately by an album every bit as savory. Hot on the heels of that first MG's smash, here's a second helping, "Mo' Onions," as well as the exquisite pop delights of "Stranger On The Shore" and the unsurpassed after-hours smolder of "Behave Yourself." The original Green Onions LP by the peerless Booker T. & The MG's: exact reproduction available now from SUNDAZED on High-Definition Vinyl, mastered from the absolute vintage analog tapes, and so lip-smacking delicious it'll make you cry.

Byrds
Columbia Singles '65-'67
PS, US When "Mr. Tambourine Man" first rumbled out of car radio speakers in 1965, it was a pivotal moment in pop history. With its jangling 12-string and epic sweep, it was the dawn of a new day: the birth of folk-rock. And the Byrds were just getting started. The next two years saw one hit after another, from the Biblical prophesies of "Turn, Turn, Turn" to the raga-rock of "Eight Miles High," from the exotic orchestration of "So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star" to the Byrds bringing it all back home with "My Back Pages." Here they are again, 30 landmark recordings in their perfectly constructed, radio-friendly mono mixes: the forgotten rarities, withdrawn singles and, of course, all the original A and B-sides. No one has ever had a stronger run of singles than did the Byrds in their prime. No one.

Byrds
The Notorious Byrd Brothers
PS, US Re-issue with 6 bonus tracks. ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "The recording sessions for the Byrds' fifth album, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, were conducted in the midst of internal turmoil that found them reduced to a duo by the time the record was completed. That wasn't evident from listening to the results, which showed the group continuing to expand the parameters of their eclecticism while retaining their hallmark guitar jangle and harmonies. With assistance from producer Gary Usher, they took more chances in the studio, enhancing the spacy quality of tracks like "Natural Harmony" and Goffin & King's "Wasn't Born to Follow" with electronic phasing. Washes of Moog synthesizer formed the eerie backdrop for "Space Odyssey," and the songs were craftily and unobtrusively linked with segues and fades. But the Byrds did not bury the essential strengths of their tunes in effects: "Goin' Back" (also written by Goffin & King) was a magnificent and melodic cover with the expected tasteful 12-string guitar runs that should have been a big hit. "Tribal Gathering" has some of the band's most effervescent harmonies; "Draft Morning" is a subtle and effective reflection of the horrors of the Vietnam War; and "Old John Robertson" looks forward to the country-rock that would soon dominate their repertoire. [The CD reissue adds six bonus tracks, including different versions of "Goin' Back" and "Draft Morning," a few instrumentals, and David Crosby's controversial "Triad"; unlisted on the sleeve is a rehearsal outtake which captures comically vitriolic arguments among the band.]" (Richie Unterberger)

PS, US New album from Swedish rockers, produced by The Soundtrack of Our Lives member Ebbot Lundberg. An edgier, rawer sound that takes the rock & R&B rage of mid-60s The Who, The Kinks, and Rolling Stones as its starting point & then adds a propulsive, modern twist.

Cakebuilder
Feeding The Worms
PS, GERMANY File Under: dubstep, breakcore. From its symphonic opening to its sweeping heavy basses, Cakebuilder's second record for Ad Noiseam shows that things are still deep in Winnipeg. Bridging angry, dark dubstep and a highly melodic drive, Cakebuilder opens a new gate for the genre, where "dub" is replaced by something a lot colder and orchestral. Cinematic dubstep of the blackest shade.

Carter, Susan
Wonderful Dreams And Adventures
PS, UK Along with the likes of Jackie DeShannon, Cass Elliot and Joni Mitchell, Susan Carter was an integral part of the late 1960s Laurel Canyon scene, a veritable "Lady Of The Canyon". Carter captured the attention of Epic Records, who teamed her with producer Les Carter and arranger Dick Halligan (of Blood, Sweat & Tears fame). Recorded in New York, her 1970 debut Wonderful Deeds and Adventures - A Collection of Stirring Scene and Moving Accidents was certainly that and more... something of an era timepiece. It was also interesting in that, with backing from Randy Brecker and most of BS&T, material such as Donovan's 'Young Girl Blues', James Taylor's 'Brighten Your Day with My Night' and 'Medley for Billie Holiday' found Carter working in the blues and jazz genres years before Joni Mitchell and other contemporaries made such a move. Carter certainly had a powerful and versatile voice, capable of handling a wide variety of genres and her crystalline voice occasionally recalled Laura Nyro.

Cocteau, Jean & Les Six
Once Upon A Time
PS, UK Paris 1919. Playwright, novelist, poet, surrealist, filmmaker and self-publicist Jean Cocteau was the literary spokesman for Les Six. With his endorsement, and the inspiration of Erik Satie and fired by the principles of Dada and surrealism, the group, comprising Francis Poulenc, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Georges Auric, Germaine Tailleferre and Louis Durey, expressed their irreverence towards the twin specters of lifeless tradition and bloodless modernism. They embraced the previously forbidden worlds of popular song, 'primitive' music and jazz and in so doing, helped purge the classical music establishment of its deeply ingrained snobbery and pave the way for generations of iconoclasts - in classical, jazz and rock music - still to come. Our edition comprises famous examples of the work of this group of composers who so scandalized twenties Paris Pacific 231, Les Biches, Le Boeuf sur le Toit and La Creation du Monde along with themes from Georges Auric's scores for Cocteau's the very influential surrealistic film fantasies; Orphée (Orpheus), La belle et la bête (Beauty and the Beast) and L'aigle à deux têtes (The Eagle has Two Heads).

Cristal
Re-Ups
PS, US JIMMY, ANTHONY, GREG DARDEN, and BOBBY DONNE (LABRADFORD, AIX EM KLEMM) play out infrequently , are unprolific in their release schedule and spend their time refining and recording their abstract electronic music. Their seclusion and deliberation produce remarkable results. Re-Ups is their second full length release. CRISTAL use computers to mutate and stretch sound spectra into long forms balanced against tenuous, implied melodies. The barely perceptible abuts the overwhelming. Placid soundfields are lacerated with incisions of digital fragments and static on the opening track. Sonic reductions boil and release evaporated melodies on the track "Xicifu," and then are decimated by the scouring noise of "Left of Swept." All across Re-Ups, disorienting and comforting elements sit side by side. When so many noise and experimental artists seem to be hemorrhaging releases, Cristal's compositional rigor is refreshing. One time pressing of 500 copies on 180-gram vinyl in gatefold jackets. Comes with digital download code.

Cross, Milton
Light in the West
PS, US Originally self-released in a limited CDR format, now remastered & reworked & reborn in this new skin. Cross (TARENTEL, DIAL SQUARE, PARTY OF DOOM) does his best work when he's playing his violin or harmonium -he's classically trained & his skill is immediately apparent. Both instruments permeate the album, adding a thick layer of glowing warmth to the songs which they haunt. From the heartbreaking opener, "It's Been Almost a Year" to the quiet, wavering whispers of "Future Ghost," Cross has created an album full of endless layers & organic details. Limited to 500 copies

Dandy Warhols, The
Earth to the Dandy Warhols
PS, US Now acting as masters of their own destiny, The Dandy Warhols are back and ushering in a rockin return to form with Earth to the Dandy Warhols, the band s debut on their newly minted label, Beat The World Records. The album is quintessential Dandys, pulling together the diverse sounds and influences that have always characterized their music, and full of the same dry vigor that s made them world famous. From the Some Girls-era Rolling Stones-meets-Talking Heads Welcome to the Third World, to the campy Mis Amigos, to the psychedelic rock of Beast of Saints, Earth to the Dandy Warhols is pleasure ride that allows you to fully enjoy the trip while still keeping you on your toes. The band reached out to their friends, too, inviting Dire Strait's Mark Knopfler and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell to join in on the rollicking Love Song. Earth to the Dandy Warhols serves as a stunning platform into a new era of the Dandy Warhols career and places the band firmly in the ranks of rock s elite class.

Disciplines, The
Smoking Kills (ON SALE / DELAYED: SALEABLE AUGUST 26)
PS, NORWAY PRE-ORDER @ $15.00, regular price $17.00. New band featuring KEN STRINGFELLOW. The Disciplines--a razor sharp, fuel efficient jet machine blending a full-on, rock blast worthy of AC/DC with anthemic melodies as sweet and singable as ABBA; a place where indie-level humility and charm meets a stadium-sized musical reach. Formed by American indie icon Ken Stringfellow (the Posies, R.E.M., Big Star, Lagwagon etc.) and the three instrument-wielding members of Norwegian chart successes Briskeby, the Disciplines have just released their first album, SMOKiNG KiLLS (Voices Music & Ent., Norway/Denmark). The album has already drawn rave reviews in the Norwegian national media; the singles "Best Mistake" and "Oslo" are bona fide chart hits; the band has been the subject of its own TV special and is on most of the major festivals in Norway this summer. The band was asked by Snow Patrol to support their London show last year; R.E.M. included the track "Yours for the Taking" on their Q magazine mix CD and has tagged the band to support their Scandinavian stadium shows in September. Coming up: a feature on Ken in Elle Scandinavia; festival and club dates in Netherlands, Spain and France; and a partnership with Chess Mobile that will put the band on screens large and small this summer (Chess will release a limited edition Disciplines phone that will come pre-loaded with the album and other features specific to the band). The band has played in Helsinki & Berlin and is looking at hitting both North and South America in the next year.

Dreamtiger
Glisten
PS, US Dreamtiger's debut EP is a work that strives for cinematic grandeur. It has been called "a soundtrack to dream to", which might begin to address the reverb drenched guitars chiming away, soft vocals echoing forever, the fluid drum beats, & sturdy melodic bass. It shows a band that will only get bigger, louder, closer to reaching the stratosphere.

Dry Rib
Whose Last Trickle
PS, US DIY with a guitar-genius/nonsense poet only begins to explain DRY RIB and the projects that followed, but they were one of a tiny handful of DIY/post-punk-era groups who'd probably have sounded the same whether punk had happened or not. And things only got cooler, odder, and more idiosyncratic as ROB VASEY's audio insurgency progressed. Ed Ball of O Level (and later the Times and Teenage Film Stars) saw Dry Rib first in late 1978 and promptly signed them to his new Clockwork label. He writes, "Dry Rib were a late '70s three piece group of some indefinable power-not Powerful in the obvious sense, as in everyone slugging out the same riff... More the power of musical and lyrical imagination... Rob Vasey's guitar style of blurred chord stylings coupled with continuous tremolo arm pre-empted My Bloody Valentine (or anyone else) by the best part of a decade." Twenty songs packaged with photos, lyrics and extended notes.

Final Solution
Brotherman OST
PS, US He was a pusher that became a preacher. A gangster pimp serving soup from the trunk of his Coup Deville. A mutant cross between Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. Everyman, our man on the street, Brotherman. Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975. Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed by THE FINAL SOLUTION, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side. The ten-song album draws deeply from Curtis Mayfield's well, certainly, but the proof in the pudding is CARL WOLFOLK's unique guitar style-a combination of flamenco and funk-that stabs around the four part harmonies. In classic Numero fashion, before even one foot of film was shot, the plug was pulled and the movie was canceled. Dragged around for 30 years by songwriter and arranger Wolfolk, the tapes of his life's work have finally been mixed, and the soundtrack album has been augmented to include two orchestrated instrumentals intended for the film. Having no stills from the film to work with, the Numero Group tasked Minneapolis' Burlesque of North America to paint a cover that could withstand the scrutiny of any blaxploitation poster geek. The deluxe single disc set is housed in our standard slipcase, with a plush booklet detailing the known history of the film and the group that created the music.

Freedom's Children
Retrospective [3 CD boxset] VERY LIMITED!
PS, GERMANY Deluxe 3CD box set edition of these albums, previously issued on vinyl by Shadoks. These 3 CDs will also be available separately, but this version puts these together in a heavy cardboard box, like the Blops CD on Shadoks. This box set edition is limited to 300 copies. Shadoks Music presents all three records by Freedom's Children, now collected together, after two years of struggle and hard work with tons of help from collectors in South Africa, England, Austria and the U.S.A. Since all mastertapes were lost in a big fire, they had to be mastered from the original vinyl, using two or three mint copies of each album to make the best possible sounding product. All three albums are the most wanted albums ever from South Africa. Some call them "The Pink Floyd of South Africa," and if the political situation in S.A. at that time would have been easier, they would have had the same status in the international music market as Pink Floyd. Beautifully composed songs, amazing instrumentation, well-crafted guitar work and great singers. The extra-heavy prog sound beats most albums in the same direction coming from the UK or U.S.A. Three absolute masterpieces. LIMITED TO 300 COPIES!!!

Guerrero, Tommy
Return of the Bastard
PS, US A brand new album from professional skater, artist, musician, producer and businessman TOMMY GUERRERO (JET BLACK CRAYON). Tommy's music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like a guy fucking around on his front stoop-and maybe that's exactly accurate-but the results touch you down to your toes. His melodies dance lightly around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is soul music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers, with more than a little nod to The Clash and Public Enemy in there, too. Features guest appearances from CURUMIN (Quannum Records), FREDO ORTIZ (percussionist for the BEASTIE BOYS), and CHUCK TREECE (BLKTOP PROJECT, MCRAD, BAD BRAINS). Previous releases on Mo'Wax, Galaxia, Function 8, Rush [Japan] and Quannum. PS, US In the early 80s, Haigh released a handful of recordings under his own name, as well as the monikers SEMA, FOTE, & TRUTH CLUB. Hanson, Jeff
Madam Owl
PS, US This album does not mark a radical departure from his previous two records, as the essential elements are still here. Human Eye
Fragments of the Universe Nurse
PS, US Watching HUMAN EYE onstage is like being attacked by space aliens. They are like something dreamed up by Philip K. Dick during an acid flashback, a science fiction sound world with rock and roll roots assaulting all of the senses. Their second full-length release, Fragments of the Universe Nurse, continues their musical mission with more mind-derailing time changes, laser-beam synthesizer blasts, hallucinatory overdriven echoplex, and a generally brutal assemblage of disparate elements from a sonic palette that ranges from mid-'70s punk rock to psychedelia, prog, free jazz, and Sci-Fi movie sound effects. Writhing giant robot snakes, huge illuminated plastic eyeballs, flying T.V. sets, and exploding flourescent paint-filled balloons only heighten the atmosphere of transformed reality and universal anxiety suggested by Human Eye's music. The musical structures whirl and explode in an entangled storm of opposites fusing together and colliding with strange precision. On first listen, you might think you're hearing traces of Beefheart, Germs, Chrome, Soupy Sales, the Residents, Hendrix, Gentle Giant, and the Boredoms. By the second or third listen, you'll (hopefully) be too disoriented to think, analyze, etc. Singer/guitarist TIMMY V. was previously in the CLONE DEFECTS."-Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry)

June, Sarah
This Is My Letter To The World
PS, US Singer-songwriter seems too common a term to apply to SARAH JUNE, however accurate it may be. Singer-songwriter she is, but the songs she writes and sings are both more beautiful and more haunting than the average fare. There is an uncommon ghostly air to her album. Kid Montana
Temperamental + Singles
PS, UK LTM is pleased to announce a double CD set from Kid Montana, the Belgian electronic pop duo who recorded a string of acclaimed releases for chic label Les Disques du Crépuscule between 1984 and 1987. Temperamental + Singles gathers together the Temperamental album from 1986 with six track mini-album The Las Vegas Gold Rush and singles such as Revisiting Yalta, Spooky, Love May Be Blind and Still Colour Waiting. Featured producers include Marc Moulin and dan Lacksman (of Telex) and Gilbert Lederman (Berntholer). Digitally remastered, the 31 track, 2 hour 2xCD compilation also includes all tracks from the rare debut ep Today from 1982, and three tracks from a final unreleased demo recorded in 1987. The CD also includes MPEG versions of the video clips for Still Color Waiting and Spooky, directed by Serge Bergli. Artist biography: Kid Montana was initially the nom de guerre of Jean-Marc Lederman, formerly keyboard player with Digital Dance and Fad Gadget. After an experimental debut EP on Sandwich Records in 1982, Lederman spent time in London playing with The The and Gene Loves Jezebel, before recruiting American-born singer Dudley Kludt for the second Kid Montana single, Revisiting Yalta, in 1984. The following year the duo signed with Les Disques du Crépuscule, releasing a run of sophisticated electro-pop records, although mainstream success eluded them. The duo split in 1987, Lederman afterwards recording several hard electronic albums with The Weathermen, and with Julianne Regan as Jules et Jim.

PS, Germany "The core of Laghonia is a combination of Peruvian and US members, Saul Cornejo Vocals, Guitar, Manuel Cornejo on Drums, and David Levene on Lead Guitar and Vocals. All eight album tunes were released on 45´s under the group name New Juggler Sound. When the band changed name into Laghonia in 1970 the Glue album came out as a kind of New Juggler Sound 45 rpm compilation. The music is catchy psychedelic Rock´n´Roll stuff, with lyrics in English, intense fuzz, wah-wah Guitars, Hammond B-2 organ and a massive, variative percussion sounds. The songwriting is Beatles/Yardbirds-influenced and the music goes into Santana, Cream, Hendrix and other different directions. 4 bonus tracks and a bio round off this masterpiece of the complete New Juggler Sound recordings perfectly. Lykke Li
Youth Novels
PS, US New album from hyped Swedish siren! ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Advance hype fueled by the Little Bit EP had Lykke Li pegged as the next in a growing string of cool-kid-approved perfect-pop fixes to leak out from Sweden's endless supply, but Youth Novels doesn't entirely play out as expected, with neither Robyn's electronic dance-pop precision nor the affable strumming of Jens Lekman or Peter Björn and John (whose Björn Yttling handles production duties here and co-wrote every track). Although it does bear some traces of these approaches, as well as El Perro Del Mar's earnest melancholia, it's decidedly odder and harder to pin down, proffering an idiosyncratic, stripped-down vision of pop that foregrounds repetition and simplicity over familiarity or even melody (though rest assured, there is ample catchiness to be had here)."

Manhattan Love Suicides
Burnt Out Landscapes
PS, US "This Leeds foursome's fuzzed-out dream-pop recalls not only JAMC, but also the willowy female vocals of C86 alumni the Shop Assistants. However, rather than revive the sexualized gore of the 80s movie underground-- or the black-leather tropes of recent retro noise-poppers like the Raveonettes-- the Manhattan Love Suicides' elf-titled debut throbs with the giddy vulnerability of the scene that the NME's C86 compilation helped spawn." Pitchfork. The Manhattan Love Suicides have a mission. They want to write, record and release songs on their own accord. The DIY ethic is in their blood. The idea of getting their name out there by writing, recording, and releasing as many songs as you can as a way of promotion is old fashioned at best. This collection of songs is taken from the 4 singles they released over last year with additional unreleased songs as well as some live recordings. The Manhattan Love Suicides wear their influences on their sleeves and never has Phil Spector's Wall of Sound met so cohesively with Jesus and Mary Chain's. The hypnotic noise and feedback are highlighted with a pounding beat and heart breaking female vocals. Just when you are thinking the shoegaze drone will go on the hooks come in and you hear the girl group sounds to keep you from zoning out. For influences think Jesus and Mary Chain, Galaxie 500, The Velvet Underground, The Rosehips, The Golden Dawn, Meat Whiplash... that kind of stuff. Basically these are the bands that every hipster /record store clerk covets in their own collection. The Manhattan Love Suicides feature former members of the much buzzed about Leeds's band Pop Threat. A much talked and written about band that sparked Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground comparisons that released several singles, eps, and tracks that ended up on compilations. Who's songs played by John Peel landed them releases on Fierce Panda and Mook Records.

Spirit of Elijah
PS, UK "Their really good one, West Coasty Christian rock reminiscent of the best tracks on the Rainbow Promise LP and solid all through. Well-written songs combine perfectly with the jammy SF ballroom sound popular among the Jesus Music bands, recalling the mellow aspects of Moby Grape in particular. The epic, spine-chilling title track is especially good. A loose, understated live in the basement recording adds to the appeal. This album is undoubtedly one of the classics from the era." --Acid Archives. "As with all Erebus Records titles, this was remastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios. Milk 'N Cookies
S-T
PS, US Milk 'n Cookies was formed by Ian North (who played guitar and wrote). Vocals were performed by Justin Straus, who obviously had a great influence on the vocal style of Michael Quercio of the mid-80s LA Paisley Underground band The Three O'Clock. The 'big name' (and oldest member) was bass player Sal Maida. Before joining M'n'C, Sal was bassist for Roxy Music. He toured with them in 1973 and played on the Viva! Roxy Music album. After leaving Milk 'n Cookies in 1976 he joined Sparks, playing on the Big Beat record. (Gullbuy)

Minisnap
Bounce Around
PS, US Minisnap's "Bounce Around" is the first release by members of The Bats without lead singer/songwriter Robert Scott. Kay Woodward takes the lead with her strong but delicate vocals and her own turn at song writing. The same rhythm section of The Bats is there so the comparisons are hard not to make. The folksy Velvet Underground sound keeps chugging along with Kaye's vocals leading the way. Minisnap features the songwriting skills of Kaye Woodward (vocals, guitar) along with fellow Bats, Paul Kean (bass, guitar) and Malcolm Grant (drums) plus Marcus Winstanley from The Undercurrents on guitar. It isn't often that a member of one of your favorite bands steps from supporting to lead role and completely bowls you over. Kaye does so with her angelic voice and heart filled songs.

Moondoggies
Don t Be A Stranger
PS, US Seattle's Moondoggies play timeless American music. Warm three-part harmonies, gothic Rhodes organ, and wanderlust guitar mark a sound rooted in boogie blues and cosmic country. Whipsmart songwriting leads to hook-heavy tunes that bristle with originality. Shades of gospel, blues, rock, and country commingle, and wall-of-sound harmonies radiate joy and passion. The influences of The Band, The Byrds, and especially early Grateful Dead are evident, though The Moondoggies' lyrical economy and compositional sensibility render these tracks fresh and unique.

Noyes Brothers, The
Sheep From Goats
PS, UK The Boutique Label presents the first ever CD reissue of Sheep From Goats by The Noyes Brothers, originally released in 1980 on the highly collectible Object Music label. The Noyes Brothers were Steve Solamar of cult band Spherical Objects and Steve Miro, who also recorded as a solo artist for Object. The album (a double set) as recorded between October 1979 and May 1980 at Graveyard Studios, and contain 100 minutes of experiments and improvisations, ranging from Eno-esque electronics to improvisation and side-long excursions such as A Good Question and It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time. Released in July 1980 in a limited edition of 1000 copies, it sounds like little else recorded before or since. Pioneering Manchester label Object Music ceased operations in 1981, after Steve Solamar resolve a lifelong contradiction by becoming a woman. As part of this process Solamar even destroyed his own master tapes, and since then the Object catalogue has languished in undeserved obscurity (with the exception of The Passage). However an Object anthology has now been released as part of the Auteur Labels series on LTM, as well as the complete Spherical Objects back catalogue on CD. The artist formerly known as Steve Solamar is alive and well, and lives a happy spiritual and musical life. Steve Miro resides in Glastonbury.

PS, US Recorded with John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth), "Here With Me" is a breezier, more upbeat work than 2006's "Over The Mountain", but is packed with no less of an emotional wallop. Headlining tour in the fall. "A rush of everything you ever liked about indie songwriters: substantial songwriting, crystalline vocals, sumptuously simple pop...you have to love an artist who reminds you of everyone but defies comparison" - Time Out NY.

Wide Awake in the Spirit World: Best Of Outrageous Cherry
PS, US ALL MUSIC GUIDE: "Detroit psychedelic pop outfit Outrageous Cherry have been crafting their own version of the Nuggets box since they dropped their reverb-drenched self-titled debut on Bar/None in 1994. Driven by the immaculate pop craftsmanship of guitarist/singer Matthew Smith, the group's penchant for early-Bee Gees melodies, Velvet Underground freakouts, and Galaxie 500-induced dream sequences changed little throughout the years, which makes the career-spanning Wide Awake in the Spirit World: The Best of Outrageous Cherry -- released on Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records no less -- such a solid listen."

Performing Ferrets
No One Told Us
PS, US Twenty-eight songs from one of DIY's iconic bands, including most of their astonishingly scarce LP, which music-historian/journalist/DIY enthusiast JOHAN KUGELBERG described as "the most seminal LP to come out of DIY... Fantastic over-enthusiastic juvenilia of an almost supernatural beauty." Whether or not the name was ironic, THE PERFORMING FERRETS were very much a performing band-whose songs clearly grew out of the way they interacted. A curious rhythm, an engaging riff, an arresting lyrical snippet, and frequently a Melodica tumble and writhe, ferret-like, into song / groove / experiments that stood unique on the UK indie post-punk scene. There's a touch of The Fall and the TV Personalities, a little garage and Beat, and a dry wit that had more to do with the Ferrets' favorite authors and comedians than anyone from the class of '77, but the Ferrets' response to D.I.Y. was all their own. Include's a 12-page booklet, along with photos, artifacts, and almost 80 minutes of the Ferrets' finest on the CD.

Pets, The
Misdirection
PS, US The Pets are full of smart hooks and contagious songs. Featuring a pedigreed lineup of Zack from the FM Knives, Vince from Short Eyes, and Dan Wood (a close relative of the Spits' Erin & Sean Wood for those keeping track...) from Right On. These guys know exactly how to turn your stomach and create some really epizootic waves of deliriously dirty pop snarl. Not content to retread the paths of any of their previous bands, the Pets are all on the same page and their simple and voraciously catchy songs will knock you into submission over and over again on each side of this record.

Pink Reason
Winona
PS, US "During a show with hardcore punks Hatefuck, DeBroux and company traveled to Winona, Minnesota. After a five-hour drive to the town, wasted locals, angry punks and gnarled three-legged dogs greeted them by leading them into a commandeered park. Inside the park, DeBroux found "the ultimate punk rock experience" with townies huffing rubber glue and mohawk-brandishing kids starting fights with crusties. The show ended and the locals gave the band three dollars for their troubles. A few kids asked DeBroux and company to chip in the three dollars on a keg. Soon, the crowd dispersed and left the band with no money or place to stay. The band wound up sleeping on an island between Minnesota and Wisconsin and breaking up soon thereafter. He wrote the first Pink Reason song, "Winona," about this experience." - Steve Kobak from Blastitude #25

Pocahaunted
Island Diamonds
PS, US There's a working theory out there about Pocahaunted: either every record they've released is a concept album, or none of them are. There's good proof to support both camps. The truth, of course, might lie somewhere in between the two (if that's possible -- which it probably isn't), but Island Diamonds makes a stronger case for the former. The ladies' longstanding studio union with Eagle Rock guru Bobb Bruno has explored an array of terrains in the past, but their partnership on Diamonds... transformed Pocahaunted into a way weirder, doper, and dancier creature than ever before, inspired in equal parts by Manda's obsession with Max Romeo tropical soul and bad acid jazz and Bethany's abiding love of mainstream rap and the Cocteau Twins (that sounds like it'd be a nightmare, right?). Naturally, the results don't really resemble any of the influences they may have attempted to channel during these sessions, but so what? Low-lidded drum machine beats, sparse guitar chimes, and the occasional air-raid siren cycle beneath a night sky of cooing, crying, and caterwauling in the classic PHAUNT mode/model. This CD digipak edition is a repress of the sold out LP on Arbor, with all new collage-portrait artwork by the band, plus two bonus tracks added on (one an outtake from the Diamonds sessions, one the unedited mix of their Bored Fortress 7" single) and a freaky digital music video for 'Ashes Is White' created by part-time Pocahaunted bassist/best friend Luis Naranjo. Edition of 500.

Qua
Silver Red
PS, AUSTRALIA "Silver Red" has been an evolving piece of music from Qua aka Cornel Wilzcek. Over the course of two years Silver Red began to take shape, with the piano and guitar source material originally recorded in 2005 at a live performance in Melbourne. This source material was loaded into an ever-growing custom software patch controlled by a French invention, the Lemur - a multi-touch, programmable screen - that eventually became the backbone of the composition. While it evokes ideas from Steve Reich, Philip Glass and other rhythmic minimalist composers, it also owes much to colorful explorations of artists such as Moondog and Roberto Cacciapaglia. In 2007, Laurence Pike, of Sydney bands Pivot (Warp Records) and Triosk (Leaf Records), took to the drums performing with Qua live and in the studio. As well as playing on Qua's upcoming pop album, Laurence played a one take drum part that was then loaded into the custom Qua software patch and re-performed by Cornel, thus lending it the same treatment as the other source material. "One Second" is a reaction to "Silver Red". It felt necessary to somehow resolve the album and boil it down to a few simple sounds. It looks at Silver Red from the view point of artists such as Ennio Morricone, Kristoff Komeda and Scott Walker and somehow extrudes one second of time from Silver Red.
